meltboy1
I am starting the removal of my tranny in the 89 5spd to replace the throwout bearing, and I need to remove the clutch master cylinder pushrod clip, how in the hell do I do that, I can't even begin to imagine how to get anything up in there to remove it, there is absolutely no room. Is there something else under the dash I can take off easily to access that?
White93z34
why in the world do you have to remove the master cyl from the car to do a TO bearing? just unbolt the slave cyl from the trans and move it up out of the way. also, only way to get that clip out is to break it, it is a one way street. meltboy1
idk the book said i had to remove that clip to get the tranny out, i have never removed a standard tranny from a car before so i was just goin by the book.
White93z34
how are you removing the trans? top or bottom? if you are going out the bottom i would just move the slave cyl up and out of the way, just DO NOT push the clutch pedal while it is like that. If you want i can dig up the part number for that clip, according to my manual, and what i found in practice the clip is not reusable. I think I paid about $6 for the little thing at the dealer. meltboy1
ya i am coming out of the bottom, I don't have access to a cherry picker... ok I will go that route then, I thought it was kinda odd it told me to remove that, it didn't seem necessary
5speedz34
Where is this clip that you speak of? I totally agree with Chris though, you shouldn't have remove any of that stuff.
meltboy1
on the top of the clutch pedal inside the car
White93z34
The clip is at the top of the clutch pedal. It holds the clutch master cyl to the pedal itself.
5speedz34
Is it like a round clip with slots in it? Almost looks like a little plastic cog?
meltboy1
Well I hit my stopping point for today, gona wait til I can get another pair of hands on it. So far, I disconnected the shifer linkage, SMC, wiring attached, drivers side tie-rod end and ball joint off, axle out of that side, axle loose on passenger side, but not out yet, drained the fluid. I currently have the jack and 2 jackstands on the front of the subframe, and a tire under each side of the car, so it aint fallin. Any tips for the rest of the tranny removal
meltboy1
ya, that's not an issue anymore, but ya, that's about what it looks like.
5speedz34
So are you dropping the whole cradle or just the drivers side?
meltboy1
well I've read it's possible without dropping the cradle at all, but if I have to drop it at all I plan to drop only the drivers side. I really don't see how it is possible to pull it without dropping the cradle at all though...
meltboy1
Would this be a decent choice for me? http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=PHT&MfrPartNumber=MU591A&PartType=244&PTSet=A By Release bearing, is that the same as the throwout bearing, is that also refered to as clutch release bearing? White93z34
FUCK perfection clutches. Seriously. I have one in my z34 right now. It is good for about one WOT run. then it is awful for hours afterwards. I would never put another back in my car.

White93z34
Thats a good question, honestly. I've been shopping around a little myself. Hopefully someone that knows their clutches will chime in soon. I know a GM clutch disk runs under $200. I haven't got as far as asking about a complete set yet. Spec is supposed to make some nice clutches as well.
