96GPSE
Question...Does the timing chain (not belt) cover on the LQ1 cover any cooling passages?
CSI_MuNkY
Question...Does the timing chain (not belt) cover on the LQ1 cover any cooling passages? I think you mean the 3100. The LQ1 is a 3.4L DOHC and only has a timing belt. Judging by your name you have an SE which would have the 3100... Jamie
1990lumina
I thought the 3.4 LQ1 actually does have a chain at the bottom, anda belt to the top of the motor? Either way, sounds like it's the 3100. I don't think there is any coolant passages, why? If there is coolant on it the LIM is probably leaking. Andrew
there is a chain too, and i dunno. doubt it though.
Brian P
yes it has both, yes he's probably talking about the DOHC, and if its timing chain cover is anything like the rest of the 60v6 timing covers then YES there's coolant passages going thru it. Maybe someone can verify 100%.
CSI_MuNkY
Well judging by his name and sig, I'm sticking with 3100 Jamie
AL
It might not be his car that he is talking about.

ManicMechanic
It does have a chain. The belt doesn't turn by itself, there's a regular timing chain that turns the "cam" pulley and it also turns the gears for the OIL PUMP. This is the 3.4 DOHC from my 1994 CS convertible PARTS CAR. Jamie FAIL! but we still <3 you. and yes... the timing chain cover would have to, since that is where the water pump is located. I do believe that the two holes to the left and right of the gear in the image above are the inlet and outlet to the cooling system
96GPSE
Thanks for all the input! Very helpful. I wasn't talking about my 3100 - looking at another car with the LQ1 in it.

Interesting, from looking at my book, I was under the assumption the timing chain was on the opposite side of the motor (driver's side) and the intermediate shaft turned the T-belt pulley. What's the intermediate shaft for then? (goes to grab his book)
ManicMechanic
oil pump drive.
w-bodys_are_the_best
See, you learn something every day, so it's just a dummy cashaft that drives the oil pump. It's pretty cool looking at the diagrams for the LQ1, they basicly adapted a pushrod motor to make it a DOHC, it's still got most of the components that any other pushrod motor has, I think I'll be tearing my bad LQ1 apart once the international is done just for the hell of it. It's not the same block as the pushrod 3.4 like the f-bodies had is it?
