oldscsc
I've been getting some bad mileage lately that I chalked up to a bad thermostat. I ran half a tank with the bad thermostat and the other half with it fixed, and I got 12.6 MPG. I do let it warm up for about ten minutes before I go anywhere so I expect the mileage to drop a little, but certainly not over 50%. I also have a slight misfire at idle now. Nothing real major, but it is noticeable. The last thing is the fuel gauge. It has always stayed pegged on full for longer than it should, but it worked fine other than that. Now it is way off. It was reading a little under half a tank when I only had three gallons remaining (37 miles at my current MPG rating). I was thinking the EGR might be dirty or a bad O2 sensor as far as the mileage goes. Those might help the idle too (?) Plugs and wires would probably solve the idle misfire if the the sensor/EGR cleaning didn't. Could the fuel gage problem be a float or something more simple? jake91
the fuel gauge in my car stays on full for about 80 miles then starts dropping at about 1/2 it is around 180 then at 240 it hits between 1/8 and 1/4 and i fill it up and normaly average 18 mpg [edit] now i realize you were saying that it is wrong now and this is how it was before. btw how many miles are you getting out of a tank of gas
oldscsc
Under 200. This engine is way more efficient than what I'm getting and I'd like to find out why.

88Regal Limited
Whens the last time you've done plugs and wires? Check the plug gap? And an 02 sensor wouldn't hurt.
oldscsc
I've only had it for 5,000 miles, and I've never done plugs/wires. They have been replaced at some point, though.

oldscsc
When you start it do you have to rev it up? Nope, it revs up on it's own on cold starts.

oldscsc
Well, I haven't fixed my mileage problem yet ( I got 10.25 MPG today ), but I'm not going to bump that part of the thread because I haven't done any of the suggested items. I'm wondering what is wrong with my fuel gauge. Symptoms being that it shows way too full. It used to hang on the top end too long, but was accurate after that. Take today, for example. It took 13 gallons ( in a 16 gallon tank ) and was showing about 5/8 still. What part could be bad? Float, sending unit?
jtwmechanic
probally in the sender, but if you'r going to pull the tank check the connector at top of tank. you can dissable the pump while the assembly is out turn on key and move the float by hand to see where the guage moves.
