jimmyfloyd
Ok, so I went to move the Intrigue into the garage due to needing some driveway space (bonneville needs a ball joint, so the acura had to come out of the garage to drive) I get in, jump it and get it started. Still runs rough from the misfire (haven't had a chance to do plugs, wires, coil pack) and smokes from the valve cover gaskets (haven't replaced yet either) So when I go to back out, it doesn't move. after a couple tries cause I figure snow has it stuck, it backs out ok. Get it back, move forward, and then back again to line it up with the garage. When I go to move forward, it doesn't move. no gears. finally after giving it a bunch of gas, it moves, but very little like there is no power. Got it in the garage, but I am thinking the trans might be on the way out, if not there already. Is there anything else I should check or that it could be? Regal_GS_1989
I'm gonna say that the Pressure Control Solenoid took a shit.
jimmyfloyd
is that an internal or external fix? and is it something I can do at home? I have a hoist, and pit with which to work.
Regal_GS_1989
That would be internal. It is located behind the side pan. It's been a while since I've seen the job done, but basically you would have to drop the driver side subframe to gain access to the side pan. As for doing it at home, you seem to be well equipped to do it there. It would also be a good idea to replace the TCC solenoid as they are prone to failure as well. IRONDOG442
it's not the PCS its the output sun gear shell this is a common problem for the 4t60e and the 4t65e transmissions. I am going to guess there is somewhere between 197-209k miles on the transmission. Here is a detailed picture of the part The splines inside this carrier are cheaply made and not heavy duty enough, they make better ones now but I have even seen those get destroyed as well. You basically need a new transmission and the 1998 Intrigues have a 1998 only and Intrigue only transmission.
jimmyfloyd
the transmission has 130k on it. Where is that part located and is it something I can replace? Also, what makes the 98 one only for 98? Just wondering incase I have to look for one?
IRONDOG442
Several things, the final drive gear ratio is different in the 1998 Intrigues, and the cooling lines on the 1998 are screw in type where as the 1999s and up have the push in style. There are differences in the linkage and mounting brackets and a few other electronic internal parts like the TCC solenoid and the Pressure control solenoid. A 1999 up will bolt in the hole but will not function electronically as it should. To replace the Sun gear shell a total disassembly of the transmission is required. Also if the problem was TCC or PCS it would surely throw up a DTC.
jimmyfloyd
will a trans from a 98 lumina LTZ or GP work? What is the final drive ration on the 98's? Thanks
IRONDOG442
The only transmission that will work in your car is a 1998 Regal and a 1998 Intrigue a GP or a LTZ trans will not work with out internal modifications. The FDR on a 1998 Intrigue trans is 3.05 or can be identified externally by the stamping on the machined pad on top of the case by two letters the letters you need are CODE TN. You can check your RPO decal under the trunk lid to verify what FDR your car originally came with: code FR9- Ratio, Transaxle Final Drive, 3.29 code F83- Ratio, Transaxle Final Drive, 3.
jimmyfloyd
ok, I'll check for that. If I do find a 99 intrigue with the 3.8, can I get the trans and the PCM and have it work, or are there wiring differences too?
IRONDOG442
I think the harness is the same you need to make sure if you find a 1998 Regal trans that its mounted to a L36 not a L67
jimmyfloyd
Bringing this back up because I am back to my Trans Issues. Having little luck finding a new trans, and since this one isn't going anywhere anytime soon, I am interested in what I would need to do to rebuild it. I can get a parts one from the junkyard to practice with out of a 98 Regal. The case on it is broken where it bolts to the motor, but the rest is solid. It would atleast be a good test check for what is bad in mine. so the differences are the Final Drive, the Pressure Control Solenoid, the TCC solenoid, the linkage and mounting, and the cooling lines, correct? What internal modifications would need to be done to get a 98 GP trans to work? Thanks.
