Fuel filter change

Ok, just as the title says. I know this has been no many times but, I just bought a microgurad from oreilly's. My question is I was told at the auto parts store that in order to relieve the fuel pressure i must push in the scrader valve. I have done a lot of research on replacing them (by the search function ), and what i have found out its either pop the gas cap open or pull the fuel relay? I don't know what would be better. I even mentioned the two options about opening the gas cap or the relay and the guy mentioned only relieving it through the shrader valve.

Give me some hints that i should look into before i start getting into this. I should have done this when I replaced the spark plugs, and wires, but I have the time now.

The Car: 98 lumina 3100

the Filter: microgard

Btw just out of curiosity anyone got a pic of where the schrader valve is on the 3100?

All three, and it's right on top of the engine, to the right of the plenum I believe. It looks like an oversized valve stem cap.

what he said.

easiest, take the gas cap off, and then loacte the schrader valve, place an old rag over and around it(to absorb gas) and press the valve. and the valve is near the power steering pump.

thanks for the info guys, so this valve i press in with a rag. I understand i press on it, is this something that i hold in when i press it? I didn't know if its like a button your press and its done as soon as it pushed in, or does it need to be held in for a few minutes?

again, im newbie on this so sorry for the dumb A$$ questions

Just a few seconds, it's just like a valve stem. Press it until gas doesn't come out anymore and you are good to go!

beautiful, good to know, heh is it ok to use some dielectric grease on the male end of the fuel line when i screw the filter, or is that just plain stupid?

Well I imagine you could use some kind of no-lock grease, but it wouldn't be dielectric!

Make sure you have a new viton fuel filter o-ring.

The steel gas line seals to the filter with an o-ring so it is OK to use antiseeze on the threads.

pb blast the fittings before trying to remove them. regular grease will work fine of the fuel line fittings, since it is not a 'hot spot'

Pull the fuel pump relay with the car running will relieve the pressure too..car will stall out when the pressure drops. Crank it over a few times after and it'll be fine that way too;

i believe pulling the FPR does not shut off the pump as the oil pressure sending unit will continue to energize the fuel pump, usually i unplug the oil pressure sending unit and wait till it stalls then try to fire it till it will not fire. Then you are good to go

Hey two flare wrenchs are needed (I know you guys know that) what is the size needed for the nut on the fuel line? I think the nut on the filter is 20mm is that right?

X2, or since you're going to be under the car, if you unplug the harness right before the tank, that'll put the pump down.
