Guest GrandPrixlover1
Just a simple question: Went to Autozone and got fluid, filter and gasket for my Tranny. On the Filter and gasket box it said "High Performance Automatic Transmission Filter". What makes it "high performance"? Just wondering. Probably nothing special, but it's still good to know... IRONDOG442
it doesnt have as much filter media in it to increase the pressure. just buy the regular one it will lengthen the life of your trans!
Guest GrandPrixlover1
that sucks...I already put it in...I didn't know that...plus the guy at autozone that looked up the filter for my car just gave me that one right off the shelf. woops...oh well looks like stock is gettin put in after the next 10,000 miles. I had to change it though because my gasket was leaking and the fluid was turning brown. But it being winter and all I'm taking it really easy on the car, so no fast starts, etc....winter can be shit on a car! Car actually drives better now, so it should be okay shouldn't it? jerry455
it could be marketing, i would either email the company about the specs or compare a new one at the store with another one. i also put in dexron VI when i did all of our cars. Guest GrandPrixlover1
I put Valvoline Max Life in mine. I find it works pretty well, as I have had previous vehicles with transmission problems and used it and they stop. It's not that expensive either, so it's a win win. IRONDOG442
It isnt marketing, generally a HP trans filter is just a metal screen inside of the casing whereas a conventional filter has paper media with a specific micron rating. ismellrealbad
isnt a metal screen and a magnet all the filtration a transmission needs?????
5speedz34
I would bet it's a marketing gimmick on these cars.
IRONDOG442
FUCK !! for christ sakes its not a marketing gimmick there are two separate kinds of filters. One is metal and one is paper and a metal screen does not filter out dirt.

PCGUY112887
Why would any company market a specific "high performance" filter for cars with these transmissions? They probably wouldn't, it's just like when you buy the "high performance" thermostat and it's still a 190* stat the only thing "high performance" about it is the box that says it... maybe it's because the company believes it uses high grade parts but that's about it. Even if one was made, I highly doubt Autozone would have it in stock in store AND marked as the typical OE replacement.
IRONDOG442
I am not debating whether or not they are truly high performance I am merely making everyone aware that two styles of trans filters are made one with paper media and one with a metal screen inside In my TH400 transmission the HP filter made a notable difference! 1990lumina
Most import transmissions don't have a paper filter - they have a screen and that's it, and some of them run a long time so I wouldn't worry about it.
gp13069
if it had a paper filter, i would put a paper filter back in it The psi will be the same or better than before & I would just feel better knowing that original paper media was there. also if the steel filter get's damaged it will get sucked in and mess up other expensive stuff in the process. where the paper filter may give you a chance to save the transmission from disaster. also change the fluid hot just like an oil change to get all the crap that you can out. PCGUY112887
If higher PSI is what you are looking for, then just install an adjustable modulator. They put the paper media in there for a reason
Guest GrandPrixlover1
Yeah it's doing good right now, but if I can't sell the car... well then It's got to last me until I at least get out of school and can afford another vehicle if I need one. This car has been great to me so far, and the next thing I gotta do is the brakes, when I get the money...

What could damage the screen? If a piece of internals actually was able to damage a metal screen I'd say the tranny was pooched anyways.
