BCM
Somebody I work with is having a problem with her 2000 GP SE. It starts and runs fine but when she puts it into reverse or drive, etc. it dies everytime,it has the 3100 engine w/ 122k miles edit: when i start it up it dies within a few seconds regardless of what gear its in. Brian P
every time, as in she can't get it to run in gear, ever?? Disconnect the MAF sensor and see if it gets better. That'd be the easy step anyway.

5speedz34
Have you been in the car or driven it since it started doing this? I would consider a tune-up and/or seafoam in order also.

No, haven't even seen it(since it's been doing this). She just told me about it at work today.
Brian P
there's no way this is a tuneup or seafoam issue. This is something likely related to fuel management, when load is placed on the engine via the tranny, it isn't getting the proper fuel adjustment. There's a chance it's also air-related as in a bad IAC or severely gummed up throttle body (I guess if it's the latter, then it would be corrected by seafoam). BCM
Would changing the fuel filter help at all? Somebody else at work suggested it..

BCM
ok. im in the car now. i started it up and it died within a couple seconds. and it wont start back up unless i turn the key off and try it again. the security light is flashing so i think the passlock or whateverits called is messed up.. This was all in Park
BCM
the car has almost 122k miles on it btw.
Brian P
oh ok so this is passkey related then. Does she have another key? If not, then see the dealer. I had one made for my sister's '02 GP for $40 and that included programming the car for it.

Or is there a way to bypass the passlock temporarily? My friends Alero did the same thing except it wouldn't start at all. Waited 10 minutes with the key to the on position till the security light stopped flashing and it started (I tried it with the GP and it still flashes). However his security light comes on from time to time when he's driving. This is the only car she and her mom have and they have to walk to work everyday because of this so I'm trying to fix it ASAP. Thanks for all the help so far.
Brian P
with the passkey 3 system you may try the following: http://www.justanswer.com/questions/1119k-re-program-pass-key-2002 Hopefully her key is the culprit and not the theft deterrent module. BCM
I didn't think it would have Passkey III. I know the key doesn't have a transponder in it(or does it?), it's just bare metal. Like this:
Brian P
UHHHHH.... that's her key? There's your answer!! The key with the visible chip is Passkey II. She has Passkey III which has the small transmitter inside the rubber part of the key. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-03-OEM-Pontiac-Grand-Prix-Transponder-Key-Blank_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a0Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem320300814140QQitemZ320300814140QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Tell her if she has the rubber half, maybe slipping it back on will allow it to work again. If not, it's back to square one.
BCM
ok that would make sense because she just pulled the black part off about a week ago. and thats about the time it quit working.
Brian P
Damn! Yeah, that would do it!

BCM
I think half of it came off and she eventually just pulled the other half off.

5speedz34
Haha nice to see that it was that simple. How much did it cost for her to get a new key and get it programmed?
