chevy
for the last two weeks my car has had kind of a slow crank and when it is cranking the dash lights dim but when the car is running they dont dim so i figured it was not the ultranator. started the car up this morning ran fine came back home went back out and try to start it, cranked a little bit then went dead have dash lights, battery is good. but when i turn the key it does not crank at all oh and the car in a 92 lumina Z34. I was thinking it was maybe a bad starter,or a bad connection any help would be great thanks
jake91
sound like the starter if the battery is good. hit the starter wit a hammer, or something sometimes they will start after that
White93z34
sounds like exactly what happened when my starter died. starter is kinda a pain in the ass to get out, count on doing a oil change when you change the starter since the oil filter has to come off to remove the starter. and even then you will have to squeeze it out of the car. do yourself a favor and get a starter for a 03' 3400 impalla or any newer 3x00 car. the starter is smaller, and more powerful. MUCH easier to get in and out of the car.
chevy
The 03 impala starter will bolt right in without any mods?
ManicMechanic
The 03 impala starter will bolt right in without any mods? That's what my 3.4 DOHC has...Bolted right in and easy to change.

If it's a 60* V6, then yes. I am not sure if 3800 starters will work.
spiderw31
^^^ What Chris said above is spot on... sounds exactly like the starter is on its way out. Dunno if a Fiero starter will work; Advance Auto has different parts listed for the Fiero vs. any 3.4 TDC car. Even if it does work, its still the old huge style, and it'll be a serious pain to get in. I replaced my starter before I knew the newer smaller style worked, and I'm kinda pissed about that. ManicMechanic
I didn't have the remove the filter when I did the CS (94 3.4 DOHC) starter first time...I don't recall how i got it out though...
White93z34
Maybe the AC lines on 94+ cars are routed different? I know that was one of the biggest things in the way for me. ALSO I believe 94+ 3.4s did not get a oil cooler Correct me if am wrong, but that would account for you not having to remove the filter, as there is less stuff in the way. Now that I think about it. LOL, I didn't even jack up the car the last starter replacement...And it was up nearly against a curb.
Crazy K
I had to change the starter on the 91 vert when i bought it. the oil filter had to come off, but I had to use a breaker bar to remove it?!?!?!?!? PO said he thought it was supposed to be tight. that car had just AC lines in the way, no trans cooler. is 03 the first year? I need to locate one of these starters myself.
