Dark Ride
Well, I'm looking at a 91 GTP in the cities and the guy says it runs great, except that if you let your foot off the gas at stop lights it will die. It has the 3400 DOHC (ticking timing belt time bomb) This sounds like a stuck IAC motor or something to me but I'd like to hear your opinions before I go look at it. Also, I'm familar with 3.1s and 3100s but not so much with the 3400 DOHC, is there anything else I should look for? What are the warning signs if any of the notorious timing belt? Thanks, Mitch
spiderw31
Could be the IAC causing the stalling like you mentioned. Could also be something like plugs / wires and just generally needing a tuneup. The really big nasties on the 3.4TDC / DOHC are the t-belt and the alternator. For the t-belt, listen for any noises coming from the belt or around the area, since a failed idler can take out the belt (don't ask me how I know this ). Also, be sure to visually inspect the belt by removing the front inspection cover. Two 8mm bolts hold it on, and it will let you see the belt on the front cam cogs. Look for obvious wear, frayed edges, lots of "hair". If you hear noises or see any of these things, be ready to replace the belt soon. For the alt, it's on the bottom of the motor, so you can's do a visual on it. Just make sure that there are no nasty squeals coming from it, make sure that the volts don't dip too low at idle, and make sure the volts don't dip real bad once everything gets nice and hot underhood. ManicMechanic
Could also be the TCC sticking...
CSI_MuNkY
Mine used to stall when I came to stop lights, turned out to be a bad Aux post connection. Jamie

Jamie Hmm, that would be an easy fix Could also be the TCC sticking... He says it will stay running if you don't completely let off the gas. Could be the IAC causing the stalling like you mentioned. Thank you, I will definetly bring tools to take that cover off and check it out Anything else to look for?
CSI_MuNkY
Could also be the TCC sticking... He says it will stay running if you don't completely let off the gas. I had to do that with the bad aux connection too... I felt like a real dumb ass, i couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong so I broke down and took it to the mechanic. He called me an hour later and told me it was a loose aux post nut... Jamie
grandprixnyc
I had this problem with mine. Oddly enough, after i replaced the radiator, it stopped. Strange!
