dodgethis
Hey everyone this one has got me a little worried. I had been driving through the rain and went through some water puddles, wasnt the coolest shit i ever did. I pulled into work and had the radio off and i herd this real loud growl noise. I swear while I was in first gear its very loud that anyone in the car can feel the vibration from it. I have checked for any check engine lights and have none on or pending. (Used scanner to confirm) I feel that I have loss of power when i accelerate because it just growl lowder but evens out as i accerlate to 2nd and third gear. I played with the throttle cable while it was in park and it does not do it when i punch it. I wonder if it might have to do with transmission or is something with the block? What do yall think? It has the 3100, 67,000 miles.
mra32
could the puddles have killed your exhaust?
dodgethis
I thought that, But i mean the puddles i went through could have not been 2 inchs high if that. I mean i was going 40 mph going through them. Heck if its the muffler so could there be water in there that could be causing it? So it would be like the car has cleared the throat out so thats why it sounds that way?

dodgethis
just to give yall an update I took the car to get in inspected by midas. I have to say they were real nice in just giving a free inspection. I had it put on the rack and thought that it was the muffler. The boys at midas did not see anything wrong with the exhaust system what so ever. I then asked one of them to get in the car and just listen to what im talking about. The repair guy drove the car and he could hear and feel what i was talking about. It was in his opinion that it is the transmission It is what i seriously was afraid of that was going to be the issue. So I got a honest tranny guy that all he works on is transmissions. I will be taking the lumina up to him and see if we cant get this damn thing running better.
Night Fury
Yikes! I don't see how that would be an issue though... I once took my '84 6000 into midas for an inspection and they quoted me AT LEAST $2000 in misc repairs... Needless to say, we didn't do that and I continued to drive it for 4 months, then totaled it, then drove it another 4 or so months

dodgethis
damn I should just stop bitching about my car and its tranny issue then. Thats interesting that Midas tried to sell you stuff. LOL i Just walked in and said bad exhaust system, need to be looked at. It was an alright visit, a in and out kind of thing. However, on a side note even if it was transmission, wouldn't I at least get a check engine light that would show a problem with the tranny? I find it all strange that 67,000 10 year old car would start crapping out on me. no worries though, cuz i wouldnt mind getting a scion tc down the road when i graduate
ismellrealbad
some trans problems will set the light but not all. most trans problems that set the light would be electronic. in your case you hearing some sort of odd noise is probably not electrically related. Samurai
as mentioned in my own Lumina woe thread, check your lower transmission mount or engine mounts in general. I am pretty sure broke or warped mine by backing up a bit too briskly to a gas pump... when you have a standard and then go to an automatic transmission, you forget that you need to come to a COMPLETE stop before popping into reverse! Every now and again, when i am in the snow, or rain, or pounding the guts out it coming up a twisty hill, i'll get the aforementioned Lumina growl. it's a mount. PCGUY112887
Can you get a video/soundclip of said growl?
dodgethis
Yea sure, just download this 4mb move clip. I would turn up the volume after 37 seconds. I dont want you guys to blow your speakers out from my radio come on for a second or two. I had the doors and windows closed and i only drove back and forth a little from the garage. Its pretty loud in the cabin, as if your standing outside the car. http://home.comcast.net/~dodge1063/car/car.wmv
dodgethis
Hey just got the car back and everything is fine. It turns out the heat shield that is above the piping before the muffler had some how got bent. It probably was hit by a rock and bent it in such a way it touched the exhaust pipe. It was like the vibration from the load on the car was amplified to the cabin by ten times. I am glad everything is still okay on the car. My next project soon will be putting new shoes on the drums, and changing fuel filter.. ...... yeehaaa mods, you can close this thread
