pose_Z34
I've noticed in the past couple days that 4th gear's been hard getting into gear coming from 3rd. It's intermittent at this point, and happens usually at mid range rpm's (Typical highway driving). I'm hoping it's just low on oil, or the clutch. Also thought it might be a synchro starting to go. Anyone have this issue before? Thanks
White93z34
no grinding? try double clutching and see if it changes anything
pose_Z34
There is a little grinding going into 4th from 3rd more of a clunk from 5th. None of the other gears do it, so I'm afraid it may be a synchro. Double clutching didn't affect one way or another. Still intermittent. BIGBULS
There is a little grinding going into 4th from 3rd more of a clunk from 5th. None of the other gears do it, so I'm afraid it may be a synchro. Double clutching didn't affect one way or another. Still intermittent. Step 1: Drain and refill the gear oil. Those things take GM Synchromesh MTF (do NOT put regular old 75W90 gear oil in it!!), and on higher mileage cars, the gear oil often drains out like water (meaning it's broke down and worthless)............trust me, *basic* shift issues can often be fixed this way. Be sure to properly refill it though...........it DOES have a dipstick (back of trans). Hell.........apples to oranges (maybe a *little* closer ), but my typical 5th gear grind on my Prelude is almost GONE after I did a drain and fill with the correct Honda MTF (I also experimented with Redline MTL and that did NOT work on this particular car). pose_Z34
That is very encouraging. I appreciate the tip!! We'll see what happens. It wouldn't surprise me if the MTF had never been changed prior to me buying it!! BTW, great avatar!! Hail to the King, Baby!!
5speedz34
Synchromesh is also available aftermarket from Penzoil.

Bake82
Adam, I do the same in my Civic, but the old Civics actually call for 10w30. Ofcourse you can always use syncromesh of honda MTF, but good ol 10w30 works perfect! I wouldn't try it in a w-body 5spd tho!

ismellrealbad
Synchromesh is also available aftermarket from Penzoil. and it is available at autozone. why is the pennzoil synchromesh better? $7 > $
AL
Synchromesh is also available aftermarket from Penzoil. Does it work just as good?
5speedz34
I have no idea. My Cutlass had Penzoil in it from the previous owner. Personally I wouldn't risk it and I would go with Synchromesh.
AL
I mean the GM synchromesh compared to Penzoil synchromesh

pose_Z34
Official diagnosis after MTF was changed 4th gear Synchro going bad. This frickin' sucks!!!!
White93z34
not necessarily a death sentence, but more of a rather permanent annoyance. my 3rd gear syncro is pretty bad. I'd rather have a bad 4th syncro go out. just shift 1-3-
Night Fury
I do that anyways.

pose_Z34
On the 1-3-5 deal, I have been skipping 4th. Just didn't want to end up causing more problems down the road. Then again, if I don't use 4th gear I can't grind it. If I can't grind it, I can't break it!!
ismellrealbad
btw series8217. just because nobody in the US can find parts for these transmissions doesn't automatically mean that nobody in Canada cant find them. I dont know if your aware of this, but we dont live in igloos up here. We are quite capable of fixing and building high performance car's without looking south to find parts.
