fleetwoodguy79
My DOHC swap is done!!!! Just have a few wiring problems that I need to figure out before I can actually drive it. I'm using a tranny from a 91 GP DOHC so the ratios will be the same, but I don't know how long its gonna hold! I'll probably have about 275-290-hp in this thing for right now (had to downsize for the tranny :-( ) and am really wondering how much she's gonna take. So how long have you all had your tranny's and how much power are you runnin through them?
patgizz
what kinda wiring issues? anything we can help with?
fleetwoodguy79
Well, I'll try my best to explain. SES light is on, but I get no codes, thinking its a voltage backfeed? Fans come on when the ignition is on, but when the vehicle is running or driving, it overheats with no fans. Tranny also shifts really weird, will not shift, and is not driveable. I can floor it and it goes nowhere and doesnt go past 3000rpm. Swapped 1995 3100 to 1995 3.4DOHC, are there any wiring issues I don't know about? Slade901
Could it be your alternator connector switch is not connected. If I recall you will get a SES light if the alternator connector switch is not connected.
fleetwoodguy79
Its connected... sure of that
kiwi133
I can floor it and it goes nowhere and doesnt go past 3000rpm. Sounds like something with the Park/Nutural switch. With the Vin X, in P and N the revs are limited to 3000.
brian89gp
You are using a 95 DOHC engine with 95 wiring and ECM right? Did you swap 94-96 wiring into the trans you are using. If you did not then that is your problem. Anyway, do your best not to venture past 6500rpm often and the trans will last a lot longer. fleetwoodguy79
Thanks for the reply Brian... Ok here is something I am thinking could be the problem. I am using the 91 DOHC tranny, but I had to swap the shifter assembly and wiring harness from my 95 4T60-E to the 91. I have a 94 DOHC tranny that still has the harness and shifter assembly on it... is the wiring ON THE TRANNY different from a 3100 vs. 3.4 DOHC? Thanks for your help everyone
patgizz
the wiring in the trans is different from 91-3 and 94-95. you need to do some cutting/splicing of wires @ the trans connector. i have a 91 engine/trans in my car w/ 94 harness and had to do the same thing. at first all i had was reverse and 4th gear. http://www.brian89gp.com/electronics/e-shift/images/4t60/94.jpg that is the 94-95 diagram. the 91-93 trans is as follows. starting at E on top(look at above link for reference to the plug) and working clockwise. E- +12v input D- TCC solenoid +12v F- Shift solenoid A ground A- Brake switch (tcc unlocks when brakes applied) B- 4th gear pressure switch G- Shift solenoid B ground C- 1st gear switch. i never did hook up the tcc (lockup) stuff, i'm going to run the lockup manually so it doesnt lock in 3rd around town. thats just a matter of running a switched 12v source to the D pin on the trans connector. still, with no lockup i get 26-28 hwy mpg. i had a feeling when you said 91 trans that it was one of your wiring issues. jeffcanada
How are you getting 275+ hosepower? And slim chance the tranny will take it at all, nevermind for how long. To the best of my knowledge GM downgraded the engines to 200-210 because it couldn't handle it. Jeff
fleetwoodguy79
Heres how I got 275+... bored and honed block, oversize .75mm pistons, 5 angle valve job, port and polished heads and intake, alternate cam timing, UD pulley, custom intake and exhaust system, I think thats about it for right now. So you don't think my tranny will even handle this?? So when I put the pedel down for the first time tranny parts will more than likely fly off everywhere!? brian89gp
http://www.brian89gp.com/electronics/e-shift/images/4t60/91-93.jpg there's the 91-93 DOHC. If you do mash the gas and the tranny spews parts everywhere, take a picture . hehe
Robby1870
If you do mash the gas and the tranny spews parts everywhere, take a picture . hehe Hell, make a video of it. I've always wanted to see a tranny grenade itself. Cough, cough........5spd......cough, cough.......... Robby
slick
Hell, when you decide to mash the hell out of it, tow it over here. I want to see this thing in person when parts of the tranny fly out from underneath the car. Death to the 4t60E!!!!!!
fleetwoodguy79
Heh, when it does go I will make sure I document it :-). I'm just trying to find another tranny to use. I have a lower milaged 4T60-e here thats from my 3100 just in case this one craps out too soon, but i've been thinking about using the 4t80 from the caddys. They bolt up right? Or do they make a 4T60-HD? I REALLY want that guy who had those NEW 5 speed trannys to show up and tell us that they're for real... cause I WILL do the swap! Thanks for you help everyone! brian89gp
The 3100 trans will not last as long, its non HD while the 3.4's got the HD version. It is a replacement though..... I wouldn't count on a tranny from DKOV for at least until early next year. Plus from the sounds of it you'll only get the trans from him, you'll have to locate the rest of the crap from a parts car. Thus, I would look for a 282 or 284 and install that in the mean time, when he starts selling his trans just swap it in. Otherwise, I should have a DOHC 4t60e available at the end of october, still shifts perfectly but rattels on a cold startup, 120k on it right now. I do believe the torque converter is shot though.
