TurboZ24
We have problems with the transmission. It will not shift quickly after say 6000-6500 rpm, so have to go slow. It really hurts the times. The HM-282 was never intended for the HP and RPM that my engine runs, we typically shift out at 7300-7400 rpm. Really did a number on those burnouts, and that was in 2nd gear too, can't do it in first, bounces off the 8K limit. Frank (the Teal Cavalier) is a really good driver and races all the time. I don't usually hit the track more than 3-4 times a year.
TurboGTU
It would be nice to have kevlar or bronze/kavlar synch in there instead of just bronze in 1st and 2nd if they don't have that kind of friction material in there. Have you looked into that? But still nice ride. Sure would supprise the heck out of someone in a Vett.
soccrplayrgtp
Yeah I also have a similar question. What can I do to my trans (284) or buy a 282 to hold my 400HP when my DOHC is done!?!?! Stock will not last a week with my diving... LOVING THE WORK DONE ON THE CAR!! Congrats
TurboZ24
Someone posted to a forum about trying to get a 6-speed setup for the 2.8/3.1 I wish it would happen, because I don't want to have to find someone who can "do" up my tranny. I might just give in, put a roll cage in the car, get a slush box (HM-125C) built up, put a 2800-3000 rpm stall in the car and just run it like that. Of course, it would suck as a street car if I did that.
dkorinko
Man that is a crazy car, my brother use to have an 87 Cavalier Z24, it had the 2.8 Multi Port V6. It was like the batmobile, it had the electronic dash and shit and it was black....and really loud to lol. It was enough to keep some people off your tail but i would declare it pretty darn slow! Congrats youd be surprised, rumor is the 284 can hold in upwards of 360, and i highly doubt your 3.4, well any 3.4, will break 350 in the enar future. i would say 300, but im sure TimG is above 300. TurboZ24
The only real problem I see with the 284 is the pull clutch. I don't know a lot of manufacturers that make high performance clutches for that specific application.

They have been know to break under less power. It depends on your driving habits, weight of car, and pure luck. The only real problem I see with the 284 is the pull clutch. I don't know a lot of manufacturers that make high performance clutches for that specific application. They make clutch discs (3, 4, 6 pucs, and various solid discs) but no pressure plates. They can re-work the stock plate but that is all.

Driving Habits=really a grandma to clutch and tranny, until it gets raced, then its shifting as fast as i can move my arm and HARD, but it handles it fine Weight=Stock, around 3400lbs, wait, 3560 with my 6'5" ass in it Luck=Good while racing, bad with after effects of racing
