jeremy Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 probably not the issue as it does sound vats related, but does the car crank/start in neutral? Quote
lb79theone Posted December 8, 2008 Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 IDK. I did not try that. (What would that result in?). But back to the VATs system.. the resistors act like the keys resistors? Or is it the resistor somewhere else? Cuz if it is the resistor in the key, couldent I just get a new key?? Or? Quote
ismellrealbad Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Yes, the resistor act as and replaces the resister in the key thereby leaving your options as: -replace the key -replace the vats (if that is whats faulty and not the key) -bypass vats using simple procedure with resistor outlined above PS: and if it starts in neutral or by jiggling the shifter then its the park/nuetral safety switch and not the vats Quote
lb79theone Posted December 8, 2008 Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 Ok Thank you, Ill try that now. And if no go Ill do the key, if not that Ill do the bypass. thank you newcommer to my forum, lol. Quote
slick Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Cutting the Orange VATS wire, and putting a resistor in line, is assuming that it is actually the chip in the key going out of the range it is supposed to read (which is the cause 99.324% of the time). Quote
lb79theone Posted December 8, 2008 Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 Ok something amazing happened!! hopefully it is what I think it is. I just went out to try to start it again in neutral and I went to try to start it normally, and it started normally! WTF!? * The sercuity light came on and stayed on consistanly for about 10 min. Does that mean something?!.. like it just being the key?? And slick you said 99.3 percent was the key screwing it up? Quote
Pontiac6KSTEAWD Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 The light staying on is also outlined in that post about the VATS bypass. Quote

Pontiac6KSTEAWD Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 I found this bit, thought there was more info... -- When you insert your ignition key and attempt to start the car, will the car not even attempt to crank over? Does the "Security" light flash during any time you're attempting to start the car? Soo.. Start with that. Wait for the next no start situation, and see what the Sec light is doing, also try to start it in nuetral, and shifting thru the gears, back to park and see if it starts. If that doesnt work, wait the 15 mins, and try again. Quote
lb79theone Posted December 8, 2008 Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 Ok, but I want to solve the problem. Do you think that is more about the key or? Do you think I need to get it bypassed? Quote
slick Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 I'm pretty positive it is the key. Quote
lb79theone Posted December 8, 2008 Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 Ok, that makes sense and me feel better! thanks soo much guys! Quote
Pontiac6KSTEAWD Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 It could be the key, or it could be the vats reader thingy. Either way, its just a process of elimination to find out how it needs to be repaired. Quote
lb79theone Posted December 10, 2008 Author Report Posted December 10, 2008 Ok. I got the new key today and everything is good so far. I think that is all I needed, thanks for everyones help! Quote
