1990cutsupreme3.1sedan
Hi, I am thinking about buying a 1996 3.1 Cutlass Supreme sedan. However I read that this year had problems with the timing chain. Has anyone had problems with this? It has 107k miles and runs smooth. Also how about the tansmissions on these later year Cutlass Supremes? I have heard alot about how they crap out. I never floor the pedal and I drive easy, what kind of life can I expect to get out of the transmission. Thanks!!!!!!!!
Redfox340
Well, I've never heard of high volume amount of problems with a timing chain. Those things have to be abused to snap / break If there's no metal-to-metal / grinding sounds on the passenger side of the block, you set. Double check oil level and seals, but from the sounds of it, you're set! As for the transmission... if no record of maintenance you should change the fluid out. That greatly increases life of the tranny; W-Body Performance - Auto Transmission Fluid - Erik
Robby1870
I have never heard of timing chain trouble being a major issue. Now, the tranny well, thats a different story. Since its behind a 3100, it should be fine. Just do what Erik said and change the fluid often and dont do burnouts, lol Robby
sl3196
In my 2dr 96 the tranny lasted somewhere around 91,000 miles under very hard driving conditions. (A kid owned it before me and I'm not too nice on it either)
