H.P.Productions
I finaly got the heads off of my 3.1 and lets say it wasnt pretty... I had to drive threw a puddle and a pssing car threw a wake witch sent water up my ram airintake and hydrolocked my engine. I pulled the front head and found one chember cacked over withe dirt and grease...one chamber had mold in it and the other was rusted.... and I still have to pull my back head head but I dont think its gonna be too pretty cause I know for sure that Ive busted 2 vavles and bent 1. and know my parents are willing to spend $300-$400 on eather heads or a used engine...and sence I cant work with no car I have to go with that low low pricerange. should I try an finde a cheap used engine.......or finde a cheap use set of 3.1 heads and just clean the block up and hope for the best.... and just to check 3.1's are suposed to have the dish pistons arent they? cause I thought they had flat top pistons. Robby1870
3.1Ls do have dished pistons. I would get the heads checked for warping, and replace all the valves in them. If the heads arent warped and the valve guides are still good, then I think you're fine. Just replace the valves. Thats what I would do Robby
H.P.Productions
^^^^ yeh that was the orignal plan but...I wanna add a little extra low end power to it sence I'm doin all this work... I should have my back head off tommorrow so I can take em to the machine shop to get checked...... but there after market lifters or springs pushrods for the 3.1? cause i found a tgp engine on ebay for $450 with 89k on it....I could go that rout and just finde intercooler and replace the trubo later... Robby1870
I dont think you need performance lifters/pushrods/springs. GMPD does sell springs that can take more lift, but thats all I know of. The stock pushrods have hardened tips (the little balls on the ends of them), so they are pretty good. Performance lifters wont help any either, I mean, the stockers do just fine. Your best bet, if you dont get the TGP motor I guess would be to port and polish the heads and intakes, if you're wanting more power. I would suggest a performance cam, but you would have to pull the motor to install it. Anyway, I used to have that theory of, "if something breaks, I'll put performance stuff in when I have it apart". I no longer have that mentality. There is a lot to be said for a car that is dependable and RUNS. IMO, if you want more power from it, get the TGP motor and swap it in, or get a junk 3.1L and build it up, then swap it in. Again, that is just my opinion. Oh, and taking the rear head off is 10x easier compared to the front! Robby
H.P.Productions
My pops shot down my Idea of the TGP engine....I had found a complete engine and tranny for $450.. I had explained to my mom I would either need a new ecm or a chip for my old one and an intercooler....and se was ok as long as you can finde it cheap........but my pops started goin on about how my old engine can still run againe and what not.... so I'ma have to put refurbished heads on my rusted 3.1 block and hope it runs even close to how it use to..... but every time I've seen a 3.1 have to have a major repaire like mine they always run like shit...... so the new plane is to get it running, get a job, and try and finde either a 3.4- 3.8 GP or Cutlass or a 86 cutty or regal with a 350 ci engine for cheap... or I get lucky i'll finde a regal Turbo-T that isnt outragously priced
