Discussion: Emissions Control

I agree emissions suck, but I wouldn't say that it's jerry rigged.

EGR's also help to burn unburned gases.

Yeah, but redirecting it to the intake to be reburned

smog... pfft.. lets dump tons of air into the exhaust and hope it helps much for emissions

It's shitty but thats the way emissions is. I'm sure if they could think of a better way then they would have.

You know the AIR system helps to reburn exhaust gases, not just dilute them?

yeah, I know it helps burn them by supplying them with oxygen so they can burn

hence there are engines without EGRs anymore as technology has progressed

like setting the exhaust cam lobes to close the ex valve early and leave some exhaust still in the cylinder. Chrysler 3.8 V6 is notrious for going back and forth between this and EGR. EGR also REDUCES combustion temps therby lowering NOx emissions.

A.I.R. Pump? Can't tell from the pic, but I'd assume that's what it is.

It came on 5-speed models only.

omg dude are you serious?

He prolly is used to the 2.8/3.1L that do actually have an air pump, but even at that, they look nothing like that

just didnt realize the LQ1 has an electic air pump

What are you asking, Chris?

Yes, I have only seen the AIR pump system on a 2.8, I've never seen one on a 3.4, but knew they existed.

It's only on the 5speeds in W-body's. It injects oxygen into the exhaust to help burn unburned gases.

Not true, my brother's 2000 grand prix with the 3800 and an automatic has an AIR pump. It is located behind the front bumper wrap on the drivers side. They are found on CA emission cars and are common to CA and the north east states. I've been finding about 50% of the 97+ Grand Prixs in the jy with the 3800 have the A.I.R. pump and othe other 50% don't.
