oil pump drive shaft o-ring bad news

Today I went to change the oil pump drive shaft o-ring because my engine was leaking some oil. I took everything out including the fuel lines. When I took out the drive shaft I noticed that there was a new o-ring (brown,GM) but it was soft and covered partly around with some blue silicon. Somebody put silicon all around drive shaft even on the top. I also noticed that my lower intake manifold gasket was kinda cracked and out by the oil pump drive hole (possible oil leak?), I bought some high temp silicon and I patched the hole up. Any opinons?

Yeah...don't use frikkin silicone! If the surface is not cracked most likely it will seal properly with the proper gasket or O-ring. I always love working on motors and come across one that had been "patched" together by a Chevy owner! What is it with Chevy people...especially small block V8's that everything is gooped up with silicone??

Sorry got off on a tangent there. If the silicone gets soaked with oil it will eventually allow oil to pass. Get a new O-ring from GM clean everything up very well, and put it back together. Make sure the surfaces are free of cracks or major metal burrs first... 8)

I cleaned everything and I put it back together. I don't really know if its leaking from the intake gasket but it could be possible. I just patched it up to see if that could be the problem. I bought oil resistant/high temp silicon. I put a brand new o-ring in (from GM). I'm gonna wait about a day until I start it up.

I can change the gasket pretty quickly, like 4 hours from start to finish, so to me, its easy. Thats why I said, change it. If its hard for you, then the silicone is the best you can do

are you a mechanic? I saw how to take apart a 3100 in my auto class but that engine was on a stand and didn't have any hoses or fluids to deal with. I could do it but its just too advanced, I'm only 17.

And Im only 19. 8) Im not a professional mechanic, but I do fix our families and many of my friends cars. It looks and seems like a lot the first them, but it really isnt that bad. My dad was like, its going to be SO hard to take it apart, but it really isnt.

Go to this link, and read the write up (written by me). You can ignore the part about the 1.6 rockers (That wont affect you), but the tear down and installation is all there step by step. However, when tightening your rockers down, tighten the rocker nut to 18ft-lbs. Dont do what is said in the write up about zero lash and pre-load. Thats pretty much it though. I hope this helps you out some. It also has sections on the oil-pump drive O-ring replacement and installing an adjustable vacuum modulator, you can ignore the last one, if you want. Enjoy!!

Well I have good news, so far I have not seen a single drop of oil on the driveway. I drove the car twice today but I didn't drive it yesterday because I wanted the silicon to set properly.

Already said that But, you do have to take the rockers loose to take the lower intake gasket off!
