GPKidd_4_Life Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Ok I have a 93 Grand Prix LE and it has WAY too much body roll. To me it handles like a truck. Like hard cornering feels like im going to flip it. And if im going over like speed bumps an stuff it is too much bounce. Is this how all stock GP Sedans are? And what would be tha cheapest way to fix it? (Im a college student so im kinda strapped 4 cash) Quote
5speedz34 Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 The car is 15 years old and probably needs it suspension overhauled. Do you have receipts for the last time anything was done to the car? Your car is pretty base so it's not made to "handle." But I'm sure it needs replacing of worn-out suspension parts. Quote
GPKidd_4_Life Posted November 13, 2008 Author Report Posted November 13, 2008 Nope i didnt get any reciepts at all. But i kinda expected it cuz i dont think the people i bought it from were car people......they didnt care about how they treated it......they put any kind of oil in it. And the girl told me she had the car 4 like 2 years and she washed it 3 times.....sad. But no i dont have any reciepts...... Quote
mra32 Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 ive washed my car once or twice in the 4 years i've had it. Quote
CRONER Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 It seems to be eternal problem, things need fixin' and there's no cash... If we had more money, maybe some people here wouldnt drive W-body cars! Quote
Hairdo12 Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Give the car the old bounce test. Push down on the bumpers a few times to get the car bouncing and then count how many times it takes the car to stop. For me, old struts with 120k miles it took about 3.5 bounces for it to settle down. New struts at all four corners and now its less than one bounce and its settled. It seriously only takes about 15 minutes for each front strut, and it only took me 30 minutes to do each rear strut. And my rear struts had 15 Buffalo winters worth of rust on the bolts. I never did any suspesion work either before this... just did my homework reading on this site. If you wanna help the body roll, go get a sway bar from a gen 1.5 monte or lumina. I got one for $13 dollars at the jy on my car. If you do the work yourself you'll probably need to scrap together about $200-$240 bucks... have a shop do it and your looking at about a grand. Quote
Night Fury Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 There is another test too... Push down on the end of the car and gently let it come up. Measure from a point on the car to the ground. Then lift it as much as you can and gently let it down... Measure again. If the difference is greater than a certain amount, then they are no good... But it's an old W. Just count on them being bad! Quote

Yea i have actually givin my car this test before. I havnt counted how many times tho. but it does bounce quite a few times after i stop bouncing it. I do plan on doing it all myself tho. Just need to find tha time inbetween work......but hopefully i can get it done soon. Quote
AWeb80 Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 KYB GR2's are the only strut you should consider Quote
spiderw31 Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 If it bounces more than once, the struts are toast, pretty simple. Of course the 3.5 times mentioned earlier is like dead twice KYB GR2's are the only strut you should consider x2 Quote

Crazy K Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 the rear struts on our cars... well. if you can pretty much move the rear at all with minimal effort, the struts should be replaced, bounce or no bounce. I compared the 94 and 95 to each other... the 94 with 20,000 mile sensatracks to the 95 with 120,000 mile OEM shocks, and both cars had the same amount of "bounce" but the 95 moved much easier and further with the same amount of force. The 95's rear was all over the road, but then again the front still is because the frame and rack are damaged. Moral of the story? if you can move the rear end with ease... even if it doesn't bounce...... replace!!!! I will be using KYBs on the rear from now on, but the sensatracks have been fine. Quote

GPKidd_4_Life Posted November 15, 2008 Author Report Posted November 15, 2008 Yea im gonna have to replace them. I did the bounce test when i got off of work and it took about 3.5 times to stop bouncing.....LOL horrible. So i am gonna buy my struts as soon as i can. Ill probably have my moms boyfriend help me. White93z34 Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Sensacraps FTL I've had mine on for 50,000 miles now. still perform as they did new. that said. for any of my own cars. I'd get whichever is cheaper. I have used both, can't tell any major difference between them. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 In a period of 3 months, I went through 5 sensa-tracs. I will never buy them ever again. Quote
GPKidd_4_Life Posted November 15, 2008 Author Report Posted November 15, 2008 Ok i just read another thread that said the KYB GR2's had a poor ride quality.......so if you have them on your car, hows the ride? And how much are they for just the rear right now.....i have to wait 4 my next paycheck to do the front. Quote
Andrew Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Ok i just read another thread that said the KYB GR2's had a poor ride quality whoever said that is a moron. www.rockauto.com Quote
spiderw31 Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 I don't have them on my GP yet (although when it is time for struts KYB is the way I'll be going), but I did have the KYBs on my old Fiero, and they are great. The ride quality is definitely firmer, but in no way poor. If they improve the w-body the way they improved my Fiero, you will be very happy. Quote

I have KYB GR2s on mine, and yeah I suffer from a hard ride... but I also have springs that are 100lb heavier than stock. An all things considered, my ride is not that bad. I love my GR2's so much I already have another set to replace them (I blew one up when I lost control of the car in a corner and hopped the curb.) Jamie Quote

But what springs should i get to get smooth ride AND good handling??? Quote
Andrew Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 keep the springs you have. you will be surprised how well the car will do with new struts. Quote
5speedz34 Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 As for the bounce test. The rear of my car is super stiff and doesn't flex, but I know I need struts. Quote
