dougman
Guys, i have a 96 Regal GS with 158K and a nasty TCC shudder. After reading advice on this board, I clipped the lead for the PWM solenoid. This nearly fixed the problem - now it shudders much less violently and much less often. I want to clip the lead for the TCC solenoid as well - I'm thinking this will totally remove the TCC shudder. Questions: 1) am I right. Will clipping the TCC wire totally disable the lock-up torque converter? 2) Have you done this and how long have you driven in this configuration? 3) what adverse effects am I risking? Please let me know your thoughts and experience. thanks!

I wouldn't recommend it unless the shudder is unbearable, you're going to lose some MPGs and that cruising feeling (if someone has ever driven a car without Lockup they know what I mean) there will also be extra heat and friction in the torque converter, but your engine will also be turning faster so it will probably equal out. I drove me crazy when the lockup went out in my old car.
dougman
Right now the shudder is noticable, but not unbearable. I'm actually trying to sell this car, so I want to make sure I'm not setting the next owner up for more problems by trying to fix the current one. jpolster2005
i was able to fix the tcc shudder in my old 95 regal by replacing the plugs wires and coil packs. turned out a misfire caused the shuddering

If you are trying to sell it, and it isn't noticeable, I wouldn't go any further than you have at this time.
Crazy K
I recommend the addition of a transmission cooler. it may help with the issue, and is good for the transmission as well.
dougman
I finally decided to disable the PWM - that solved the shudder. As far as damage, danger and drawbacks, well that is for the new owner to find out. (he bought with full knowledge of the problem, and thus I took a bath on the sale price). I sold the car about a month ago. If my circumstances (young family, no time) were different I would have kept the car and driven it as-is. Oh well, probably better that I sent that thing down the road. Thanks again for all of your input.
