Spacing out rear wheels on GP

GJD5

Recommended Posts

I kinda wish the rear wheels on my GP were spaced out a little more to line up with the fender well and look better. I've read some posts about these and looks like AWeb sells them and I need longer wheel studs but what's a good size to get if I just want the wheel spaced out to look good and still not rub anything?

Get a set of 255's on some cross laces and you won't be worried about filling out that wheel well anymore.

My 255s rub on the fender lip. I intend to roll that lip before I get new 255s to go on the car.

No spacers

NO!! Wheel spacers look cool, but there is a better way!! And better for handling!!

Use the longer lateral links from like an 01 Impala like I did.. Should be 97+ Ws as well... After install, make sure your stuts are slotted, have it aligned, camber will be very negitive from the longer lateral links, after camber adjustment, the top of the wheel effectively gets pull 'out'... Voila!!! A wider track/stance that truely increases track width!!!

Top it off with a 22mm/7/8" rear sway bar from a 95 Monte Carlo (and maybe 96, but not verified) and perhaps coilovers, anbd GMPP tubular trailing arms, (im unsure of the leaf spring being long enough to be used safely) and you have one hell of a rear suspension for cheap!!!

I highly doubt the monoleaf would still work.

Like Scottster mentioned, what year and model of GP are we talking about?

Oh, I just noticed in your sig that it's a 96.

LoL, oops.

So yeah, you can either get the longer lateral links and build on a coil over system, or stick with the suspension you got and go to a 255 tire and roll your inner fender lip.

FWIW, 255's fit on the front with NO rubbing, and I am lowered 2 inches. I put them on the front at the track hoping for a bit more traction, they didn't rub so thats where they stayed for the trip home.

The 255s on the front and back are a HUGE difference over the 225s that came on the car stock. When I had them on the rear I could not break the ass end loose, and now that they are on the front, it tracks like its on rails, till the 225s out back break loose, lol.

What exact size fronts do you have? My 255-50 drag radials rub the inner fender on my CS.

255/50ZR16 Kumho Ecsta Supra's

No rubbing on the front what so ever, even on large bumps. On the rear you can see in this picture where the tire has been chewed up by the inner fender lip.

You can see the size too...

I currently have 245 50's on 5 spokes and the tire does fill some of fender well...just wish it was a little bit more.

Anybody use aftermarket wheels for a 2005+ Chrysler 300? They have the same bolt pattern and offset...saw a nice set with a offset of 18mm instead of 25mm...so that would be 7 mm wider I would figure. I think that would be just about right! Here's the link to them:

Interesting the inner fender is obviously different between the GP and CS. Mine stick out about 1 1/2 inches too but they are track tires anyways. I will be using a 245 on my crosslaces just to keep the tire in the fender.

Just as reference, I have two stacks of wheels in the garage, both with 225/60R16's on them.

6.5" 16's (Torque stars)

8" 16's (X-laces)

The X-lace stack is about 2" higher. The five spoke rims simply won't stretch as wide.

These are the 245/50ZR16's:

The stance is about as wide as you want it looking. It also lowers the car approx. one half inch just in tire wall height (diameter loss is 0.9 inch per wheel).

Here are some pics of those tires on the front

Um, and a bone to pick with you?

When did you get the gold x-laces and why was I not informed??

We could have been twins.

But now my x-laces are more bronze coloured. It's growing on me (more importantly they don't lose air).

I've had them for quite a while now. Kuntzie had them so I bought 2 and GOT2BGM bought 2. Our intention was for track tires, but the 2 I got had these 255s on them.

Eventually they will all be getting refinished, just not sure if I want to go black or gold yet.

Pretty sure he means what he says. Damn you B4U guys, as in Damn you for having a body that can fit 255s under.

Q-ball is the only B4U wannabe around here... he's the one that slapped B4U on a car that didn't come with it!

FWIW, even without the B4U the bare GP body has a slight flare to the fender, whereas the cutty's do not.

Oh well they are track tires only so it's not like it will always be like that. I am curious if a 245 tire will clear the fender or not. Has anybody used a 245 tire with x-laces on a cs?

This isn't a bad idea...have you experienced any kind of binding in the strut since the angle between the wheel and strut is increased? How does it ride compared to when you had a monoleaf? Got pics?

I have put about 3000 miles on this setup so far with NO issues :burnout: The only issues that MIGHT happen is the inward flex on the sturt tower, but I have a nice rear strut tower brace that was adjustable to I was able to preload it. I dont even hear anything flexing back there.

The ride is better, even my GF complemented on how it rides better. It responds quicker and feels much more stable, espcially around corners... I will try to get some pics, maybe today
