Lateral Links/Trailing Arms

I did a search for each of these and I'm honestly lost. I really can't tell which ones are called what. I figure lateral links go...laterally across the width of the body, but I've seen people call those trailing arms as well. I really don't know, and the fact that there are very many threads about this makes it a bit confusing.

That being said, I don't want to mess with the 4 bars that go laterally across the width of the body, as I believe those will stiffen the rear end too much and it will be too easy to break the rear end loose when it snows around here.

There are those two other bars though that run the length of the body at the back wheels. Can anyone tell me more about those? Would it make any difference to replace those as compared to the stock ones? Just trying to figure out of I really even need new ones. Mine aren't rusted, but the car has 187,000 miles now.

Thanks

Those are the lateral links.

Go with the tubular trailing arms. Either from the dealer or find a 9C1 Impala in a junkyard.

Thats not true... mine handles the Canadian winter just as well with the held bars as it did stock. All I did for last winter was adjust the coil overs back up to stock height.

trailing arms are about 2ft long, run longways down the car. if you upgrade, you prolly wont notice much difference. but they are much stronger and ive seen them break before. alot of the first gen cars have a hard time removing the stockers too BTW due to rust.

they are listed for 2nd gens but will fit your first gen.

or get them from gmpartsdirect.com for a little cheaper. p/n 12498649

Just go with whole nine yards, and replace them all with poly bushings... you'll get your moneys' worth that way

x2

Mind you we have a bit of a bias in favor of them, lol
