How do you know the tranny is going out? What's it doing?

its not shifting into third and the tranny fluids got a burnt smell to it

I'm no expert but I'd try a flush/filter change before I dropped the money for a new tranny.

Yeah do a trans fluid and filter change first. Spending $50 first is better than $2800 first. DONT do one of those AAMCO extreme flushes. That might cause damage instead of help.

First off. How "burnt" is the fluid. If it is still somewhat red, then fluid and filter change should do you good. If it is a little on the darker side, could be that a flush is in order.

A flush can make it worse, or it can make it much much better. All depends on the type of flush. You could see if the shop could just flush it by disconnecting one of the cooler lines, then keep pouring in new fluid with the engine running until the dirty stuff is gone and the clean is coming out. Then change out the filter, top off the fluid and that could very well take care of your issue. Doing a flush this way does not subject the transmission to fluid at a higher pressure then it can pump, which could possibly loosen up some gunk inside the valve body.

If the fluid is fairly dark, then also make sure to check it for metal shavings. The trans fluid in my cutlass was as black as tar and full of metal shavings from the diff packing in. I slapped in a new diff, flushed out all the old fluid like described above and then changed the filter and filled it with fresh stuff. The car drove and shifted perfect for the 2 years and 25000 km that I drove it.

There is a possiblity that it could be fixed cheap and easy.

Why even ask questions if you're not willing to do the work? Every single thread you've made has been pretty much pointless.

Who is that^ directed at? I'm changing my trans fluid and filter tomorrow. That's why I asked about the torque specs on the pan bolts. Not saying what brand of filter tho

I'm pretty sure it was to BadTemperedZ34. All my manuals are packed away right now. I usually just snug them down evenly with a 1/4 ratchet.

That's what I did on the last one, and didn't have a leak. Just thought if there was a torque spec, I'd do it that way with this one.

Thanks, Tom
