R Crusoe Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 I need to find a qualified mechanic in South Florida (Miami area) who is knowledgable in the 2.8 L Pontiac engine. My '89 Grand Prix SE with 5-speed manual transmission is giving me fits. I can't seem to get the idle to remain a steady 900 rpm. I need someone who can help me analyze the problem and fix it without the usual try this, try that mentality. Can anyone make a recommendation? I also would like to know if anyone has experienced a problem with the instrument gauges registering with the power turned off. When I turn off the engine and remove the key, the oil pressure gauge and the battery gauge both start to move to the peak levels. Turning on the key brings them back to zero but when I remove the key, the gauges go up again. Quote
5speedz34 Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 The early GP clusters have issues, but I don't think that is a considered a problem it might be normal. As for the idle, any reputable mechanic should be able to diagnose that; these aren't Fiats. Quote
Addicted To Boost Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 It could probably use a tune-up with some new AC Delco plugs and wires, a new fuel filter, and a good throttle body and sensor cleaning. Quote
