if it happened all randomly, i would think there is a sudden shortage of oil. replace your oil filter, when they fail they block off oil pretty well.

x2 usually if the engine is going to knock it will do it when it is cold and first started. Do you have an oil pressure gauge?

rod knock: any or all of - knocking at idle/light load med to high rpm/on decel

main bearing/piston pin/piston: generally at all times

cam bearing/valvetrain: knocking or noise at double the speed of crank rotation (use timing light)

a knock on an engine when it's cold and first started might not be a shortage of oil. it could also mean that it's piston slap.

well everyone should know the difference between piston slap and a rod knock. I have never seen one that did not have piston slap lol

ok i must say this have your mechanic check for collapsed lifters and i only say that because im doing that now after just rebuilding the top end (my own dumb ass fault for not cleaning them in the first place) and it only took a week and a half for them to go.....

oh and you might wanna check your oil pressure
