89GP_SE
So I was driving around town dropping off applications for jobs and shit, when I feel my car start to jerk, almost as if it was missing, then it stalled right in front of a Part Source of course. I pull in a spot and turn it off. Try to start it again and it felt as it was going to start, you know that shaking shit the 3.1 does. So I wait a couple of minutes and try it again, and it started, but ran like shit. It smoothed out, so I put it in gear and gave a little gas and it died. So I turn it off and try it again, this time I noticed the fuel pump wasnt surging. But it still started and idled for 10 minutes, as soon as I put my foot on the gas, it starts to jerk and dies. By this point I had enough, I started it, revved the piss out of it and bagged it home. Im just trying to figure out what would cause this, while its idleing, running smooth, as soon as you put your foot on the pedal, it starts to miss, then chokes out and dies. Would this be a fuel issue or a spark issue, also, IIRC dont the fuel pumps in these cars surge everytime you turn the key on, cause mine is not, but it continues to run. Would a bad crank sensor cause a fuel pump to quit. I used that little fuel pump test wire, put it to positive on the battery and all it did was give a little spark. I never heard the pump surge, with the key on and off. I need help. Haha, thanks in advance guys.
oldscsc
Well, any GM with FI I've seen turns the fuel pump on for three seconds after you turn the key to accesory. If your fuel pump wasn't working it could have been running on internal pressure but I highly doubt you could drive it home on just that. Up date, I can actually hear the pump now that I am at home, but it is very faint, unlike before, which it was always loud. Where do I hook up a fuel pressure gauge to this beast? I don't know, wait for someone else's input.
Addicted To Boost
Hook up the fuel pressure gauge to the shrader valve on the fuel rail. Sounds like you have a dying fuel pump man. What car is this?

Crazy K
sounds similar to when I had a fuel injector fail. I think it jambed open. schrader valve on the fuel rail to check fuel pressure.

Crazy K
In my experience... a car with a bad TPS may run and go fine, as long as you don't exceed 1/2 throttle. You can unplug the TPS sensor and see if the car runs better, basically as I describe above.
1990lumina
Don't unplug the TPS before starting it thoguh. I have done that and it reved itself straight to 2000rpm+
w-bodys_are_the_best
My brother's lumina did that, 99%sure his was the fuel pressure regulator.
89GP_SE
yeah if I press the accel a little, it will chug, at halfway it will bog and die. I was trying to finda pressure tester today, but they want 60 bucks for one here, jeez, so no avail on that one, tommorow maybe. I had a buddy over today to do tests, and he too said it sounded like a fuel pressure regulator. May just have to change that.
Crazy K
did you pull the vac line off the regulator and see if the idle changes, or if fuel is coming out the vac port?
89GP_SE
did you pull the vac line off the regulator and see if the idle changes, or if fuel is coming out the vac port? no, which vac line. I put a pressure tester to it, when I first surged it, it got like 2psi, running it gets
swift13
i believe it should be in the range of like 47 psi but unsure i had this happen to my 95 vert i couldnt hear the pump at all but it would run, i changed and tada heard the pump loud and clear. it seemed as though it was only running on half power from the pump and when i pulled it you could see the pump was a little burnt up. SigEpCutlass
Are you sure the fuel filter isn't clogged (or partially clogged)? That very well could be the reason why you don't have enough fuel pressure...
