Can the EGR crack?

I've been searching for a vacuum leak and I've narrowed it down to the EGR area. The plenum and throttle body are not the source of the leak. Spraying starter fluid has no changed the idle at all.

Is it possible that the EGR cracked somewhere on the underside? I'll admit I wasn't the most gentle with it when I had the plenum off.

I've checked and rechecked everything under the hood. I replaced the plenum gaskets again. I double checked the PCV valve vacuum line. I even looked at those brittle vacuum lines (not the ones for MAP, vents, cruise), but the long thin ones above those (they're standing above the engine in the video). What are those for?

that or the tube itself if it kind of sounds like an exhaust leak

its a whistling noise,

This is from a few weeks ago. It's not as loud, but pretty close.

EGRs don't fail that often right? I should be ok with a JY one? I don't have emissions tests in my area, so I'm not too concerned

They're supposed to be under that black metal plate with 2 7mm screws. In the video I didn't bolt it down yet.

Just an update, I took off my EGR (in the pouring rain) and the right screw hole broke in half. I'm going to try to find a used one, but I might have to bite the bullet and buy a new one. I'm 200 miles away from home

The top vac lines on mine just push in... :dunno:

WEIRD!!! I have NEVER heard a noise like that.

I want you do do something.

REMOVE the serpentine belt... and run the motor (but for no longer than 30 seconds to prevent damage) to see if the noise is still there, and not associated with a bad accessory.

if the noise is gone... spin all the pulleys to see if one is grinding.

No emissions where you are? Just do an EGR delete! It'll be cheaper than another EGR!

yes... why not. and lets just remove all the warning lights from the dash too.

fix it right. If you do need an egr.... and knowing the situation of J/Ys in NY... I have a stack of parts. LOL!

PM me.

So the noise is from the EGR. Read below!

Not the same vacuum lines. These may not actually be vacuum lines, but are not the ones that go in the throttle body.

I just went out to do that, but once I reconnected the EGR the whistle got really faint/disappeared. . Weird thing is, the EGR is only connected with 2 of the 3 bolts because of this (camera phone):

Yup that's a piece of the EGR base

Took the car out, it drives fine. It just made a 200 mile trip yesterday fine. Once in a blue moon, the ECM freaks out (jumpy acceleration, stalls and won't start) and I need to disconnect the battery. I'm sure once this EGR is replaced, the problem will be solved. Thanks everyone :high5: (No EGR delete for me thanks!)

I know the vac lines are a mess. It's only b/c I've been searching for this leak, but I'm 100% sure they all go to the same spot. I'll reorganize them once I get everything straightened out and fixed. They used to be so beautiful  OLD pictureeee
