tdvs Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 Have a '95 3.4. Is there any advanced warning to the timing belt and or pulleys going bad, breaking, like "Check Engine" light coming on? My wife said no "Check Engine" light came on B4 the belt broke in her Intrepid last year. Thanks, Tom Quote
oldscsc Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 There was no indication when mine broke, it just died, then check gauges light came on. Quote
slick Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 If you want advanced warning, check your belt periodically. Quote
spiderw31 Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 What they both said. Advanced warning is checking it out periodically. When the belt goes, the car stops. Done. Quote
tdvs Posted September 12, 2008 Author Report Posted September 12, 2008 Thanks all. I'll just keep checking. Just hope it sells B4 anythig goes wrong. Tom Quote
rockfangd Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 either that or just replace them and be done with it lol. Quote
turbojohn Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Should replace a timing belt at least every five years. Don't wait for them to break. It's good maintenance practice to go over a check-list every 5-years. Radiators need cleaned or replaced in that length of time. Front brake pads, timing belt, transmission filter, spark plugs. Typical mileage is 20K miles or more a year. You might not wait exactly 5-years to do some of these things... Quote
CSI_MuNkY Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I check my timing belt for cracks, fraying or any other signs of wear. Also keep an eye out for black dust building up, if you get a lot of that its a good sign that your belt is wearing. Now that my car is off the road, the timing belt is one thing I will be replacing before it goes back on the road. Jamie Quote
Psych0matt Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 that question made me to me it's like wondering if a light will come on before you run over a racoon, ripping off your exhaust system Quote
