My 3400 Swap Thread

It seems my car has decided its time to upgrade the motor for something a little better.I should be fine now with the way the car is running since I only have a 25min round trip to work everyday. So Sunday with the help of 1LoudCutty and Crazy K (who showed up after all the work was done LOL) I pulled a 3400 out of a 01 Impala. Unsure of miles since there was no keys or even instrument cluster for that matter to check. Here's some pics I stole from the Whatever! thread on it (Please note it was raining and we had our greasy hands all over the engine when the pics were taken):

Now at home on the stand partially disassembled:

The motor has the carbon build up and caked on grease I expected, but looks good overall. My initial plan was to just clean the motor up and install new top end gaskets, but now I think I'll change the head gaskets and everything else while I am at it and maybe do a few upgrades like P&P the UIM an LIM and maybe even the heads. Also going to do the OBD2 swap with 97 Lumina PCM so 1LoudCutty can tune it with HP Tuners.

So you guys that have done the swap (Brian P.,19Cutlass94) I need to know what brackets and accessories from my 3100 I am going to reuse so I can get them powder coated along with the 3400 parts. Any tips on what exhaust manifolds to use, cams, springs (LS1?) would also be helpful. Going to rejoin up on 60degreeV6.com since I don't remember my old username/password.

I'm also hoping to get this all done in the next month or so also since fall and winter is on its way. More updates to come soon.

Yeah it came with a 30 day hence the other reason for the urgency on getting it in the car. It is pretty filthy but the innards seem to be in great shape. Still need to pull the pan to inspect everything else there also.

Just use your existing accessory brackets and such... Although I do belive the only difference MIGHT be the altenater...

I will try to get your harnesses, PCM and climate control soon. Be prepared to have your dash out over a weekend and the engine out so I can wire everything up and swap the harnesses

Internally, the engine doesnt look bad. But do at least this rob, drop the oil pan, clean it out and get rid of any water that may be left over, and install a new felpro permaseal oil pan gasket and while the heads are off, install the distro drive o-ring..

I will do what I can to disable the EGR system on the PCM side. Just make sure to block off teh manifolds.

Yeah dont worry, after thinking about it, Im not taking any chances so Im pulling the pan and timing cover to inspect everything and then powder coat what I can and get it all put back together.

btw, check out a 3.4 DP and see if that will work....I "think" they are 2.5" stock from what I've heard....and while the motor is out will make this way easier to check.

also, pop the manifolds off and do some P&P there....get that thing to flow

Yeah Im trying to figure out what exhaust manifolds to use first then I will probably have a shop make me a 2.5in DP once I have the motor in and running. Plus I want to get 1LoudCutty's exhaust setup. My only enemy right now is time and money since Im running out of both LOL.

Seeing as how it came from a W-body, all the brackets should be the same. engine brackets, all the brackets on the timing cover, everything. Including the alternator and brackets. You should be fine with that timing cover as well. Really the only things you need to swap over are the throttle linkages, the Map sensor bracket, and maybe the EGR. Im not sure what style they used in 95, but if its the digital EGR, youll need an adapter.

now as far as modding the motor, your still 95, so your still OBD1.5, you cant tune unless you swap to OBDII. Having said that, you could prolly only get away with the cam that I have, but then youll need longer pushrods, LS6 springs, LS6 spring seats, you could use your lock/retainers still, but if you have extra money i would get the Comp Cams lock/retainers, then youll need someone to do the head work if you cant do it yourself.

But if you are swapping to OBDII, you can basically choose the cam of your choice, and you match the springs and components to the cam. Youll still need longer pushrods, springs, spring seats, locks/retainers.

As far as exhaust manifolds, Im using the log style manifolds, and Brian P is using the log style up front and the 3400 exhaust manifold in the rear. they all have the same diameter opening in the exhaust manifold. I think the newer 3400 exhaust manifold flows a little more as well. But really if your gonna go serious work to this motor, just go with headers. Youll get motor power, itll sound better, its just a win win all the way around.

And youll deff want 2.5" exhaust.

And just to give you an idea of cost, I spend over $2k on my motor and over $1k on the exhaust. so be wise in all your choices and make sure you research whats going to be best for you, and your application.

Well here is the current plans for the motor. The CS is going to be my DD so I really dont want to do anything extreme performance wise, so I doubt I will do a cam swap other then maybe a mild one. So right now a P&P UIM/LIM and heads with 2.5" DP and full exhaust with a custom FWI like 1LoudCutty's along with a OBD2 swap w/97 Lumina PCM for HP Tuners is what I am going for. Im going to try and powder coat the manifolds, timing cover, valve covers, and any brackets black. If not, then I will just sandblast them and paint them with gloss black engine paint to match the block. I figured all black with maybe either polished or blue 3400 on the UIM should look alright in a white engine bay and should be easy to clean.

Now Im trying to find some good bits to use for porting. Summit has a 3 piece kit, but its $63!!!! Im hoping I can find something cheaper then that.

And on the plus side, a guy I work with said he would drive me back and forth to work if the motor in my car now takes a crap before the swap. So now I will have a little extra time to get the motor and OBD2 swap ready instead of rushing it and messing something up.

Sweet, extra time!!!

Well, I will donate my exhaust and a FWI made by me for now to help out with the costs. You can just help me pull and buy a 3400 for me sometime when you get the extra cash

I will try to get the harnesses and PCM within the next couple weeks. Not sure if I can do it Sunday (plans with teh GF) and Tuesday (B-day get together at my parents since my Mom is outta town til then). So, at the latest, the next Tuesday. After than, i will start working on them, but I have a much simpler idea. Swap the entire vehicle harnesses since there isnt much left to do to get the rest of the harness out. Plus, no splicing equals NO future issues and it'll be plug and play. I will try to make everything look like 1 HUGE harness to get the 'large harness' price

I will be getting the climate control unit. Its stupid of me not to while I am there.

The PCM will not be a freebie. Gonna get the 30 day warrenty on it for good measure.
