Spilly
I have a 93' Regal GS coupe, the odo says 215,000 miles. Now, I know the 3.8 has been proven a super reliable motor over it's decades of being produced, buut. This car runs, too damn good to be original, it pulls perfectly, no check engine lights, no oil burning, no missing etc. Starts right up no matter how long it sits. Same for the trans, no slipping or anything of the sort. Sooooo, how can I tell if the motor/trans has been replaced?

ManicMechanic
GOT 2B GM has $1 carfax... But that isn't going to tell you if the engine has been replaced.
Spilly
I didn't think they did.
White93z34
one thing that can give you a idea if the trans has been rebuilt would be to remove the inspection cover off the flexplate and look up at the torque converter, if it is blue the trans has most likely been rebuilt. Night Fury
Aren't the VINs tacked on each somewhere?! Why not just check those?
ManicMechanic
Yeah, on a 3.8, it's either above the oil filter or the front left on on the block next to the timing chain cover or it's on the left (front side) ear of the bell housing mount. Trans is on the back side, near the VSS.
jman093
it pulls perfectly, no check engine lights, no oil burning, no missing etc. Starts right up no matter how long it sits. Same for the trans, no slipping or anything of the sort. My money says it hasn't been replaced. All the things you've heard are absolutely true. Mechanically, these cars can run forever. The part I just quoted exactly describes my old Lumina i just got rid of and my dad is now driving. It has nearly 250,000 miles now and the engine has never been replaced or had so much as the manifolds or valve covers taken off of it. tranny's all original and unrebuilt as well. It had some electrical issues for awhile several months back, but got that taken care of and it runs like day it was new. Just keep up on maintenance and paint, body, and interior will go long before the drivetrain.
