Cam'ron
Friend of mine has a 2002 GTP and this morning it wouldnt stay running for him. Starts for 5 seconds and dies with the security light flashing on the dash. Runs fine when it starts other than shutting off. Any ideas? 5speedz34
There isn't VATS on that car IIRC. It could be a passkey issue. Maybe because its dying it going back to the "on" sequence?
Cam'ron
VATS / PASSKEY its all the same electrical gremlins to me Any way to fix this? without ending up in the shop?
5speedz34
I don't know what the problem is, I'm just giving you a shot in the dark. Vats and Passkey are two completely different systems I think.
Crazy K
unsure. but a 02 gp did the same thing with the new key, cause it didn't have the transponder or whatever the car needed. funny thing is the car would work with that key, as long as the original key was on the same keychain! I suspect the transponder or whatever it is reciever in is the dash, behind and to the left of the DIC... since there is a box i have seen in j/y GPs in that location. Cam'ron
He's using the original key and it has been working all along since he got the car, it just stopped this morning after a short trip. We are both at a loss to explain it and he would love to keep it out of the shop for this.

I know this issue happened to a neighbor... and they had to have the dealer fix it.
5speedz34
Does his key have a chip in it? I know they changed the keys sometime in the production run.
Crazy K
the 02 gp i mentioned has a stock looking gm black rounded top key. the duplicate looked the same but lacked a transponder. There would be no chip like the 94-97 gen 1 (and gen 1.5) w-bodies have.
Cam'ron
no chip just the small round top is disabling passlock an option??
BIGBULS
is disabling passlock an option?? Sure it is. But then the car will NEVER run Seriously, take it to a dealer. Security system issues are usually a headache, and you (or an independent shop) are more likely to fuck it up more than anything else. Don't be surprised if the fix isn't paricularly cheap though..........it *may* be as simple as a loss of programming, but my guess is you need a new lock cylinder or ignition switch, or wiring in the column or something similar (that will take a knowledgeable tech to find and fix). Nick1234
maybe try turning the key on, trying to start the car, ( don't actually start the car, just let it turn over once or twice) and then leave the key in the on position for 1/2 hour. try re-programming it. rockfangd
i always htought that was bad for the ICM and coil packs
Crazy K
i always htought that was bad for the ICM and coil packs probably not. only on the old distributor based cars where the coil is always energized.

slick
I bet I could bypass it. Easily. But yeah, sounds like he needs a new ignition switch.
no1kicker
He needs a security relearn. Turn the ignition switch to RUN, with the engine OFF using a master PASSKey®III Key (Black). Observe the SECURITY indicator. After approximately 10 minutes the indicator will turn off. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK, and wait 5 seconds. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes. Important The vehicle learns the key information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF/LOCK to RUN. You must turn the ignition switch OFF/LOCK before attempting to start the vehicle.
