Screaming Fuel Pump!

I tried to make a recording, but it doesn't have enough volume to actually pick up over the exhaust.

I noticed a while back a weird sort of higher-pitched humming coming from the back end of my car... changes frequency when I apply the brakes (electrical draw.) I've finally come to the conclusion that my fuel pump is screaming at me.

I know it's been a couple years, I figure I should go ahead and invest in a delco one now. First off... delco's the best and most reliable I can get, yes?

Secondly...

Has anyone ever had a noisy pump that ran fine, just made racket? The car seems to be running normally, or did anyhow. I thought it felt like it was a bit rough at idle, while sitting at lights and such, but it starts right up, isn't dying while sitting (either in park or drive) and accelerates fine. Maybe I'm hallucinating, who knows. The bitch is posessed, and probably pissed because she's been on dirt roads three times this week, and hasn't been washed in nearly a month.

:leaving:

Ummm, how much gas do you have in it??? If your low, put some gas in it and your problem will be solved

I heard it first at 3/4 of a tank.

I know the sound a fuel pump makes, it's not supposed to be this LOUD though. It's loud. I can hear it over road noise, with the windows up or down. That's what concerns me.

The volume doesn't change really with the level of fuel in the tank, that's whats leading me to think the pump may be about to grenade itself.

the fuel pump in the lumi has been just as loud as yours evilette. mine's been doing this for a year and haven't had any problems, wether at a 1/8 tank or a full tank, it makes that noise. but it dosn't make it right away. it does it after driving for a while.

Yep exactly then after you shut the car off for a while and it gets to cool off, the noise stops... for a while.

That relieves me a bit, but still the fear of it dying randomly, and me having NO WAY to get to the parts store, to get one... scares the crap outta me. LOL.

I used to worry about stuff like that.. Then I remembered that there's always a way to get the car home or get to the parts store.. You can always take a taxi, or hell, some of the parts stores around here will even make deliveries.. Not worth the stress of worrying about IMHO..

in my old Z, i had to replace the sending unit and figured i should replace the pump while i was there. the new pump was noisier than the factory one!

worked fine til i sold it, but never a problem. i dunno if i would worry about it.

I would recommend replacing it. I had a friend with a 97 lumina that had a loud hissing fuel pump and I always told her we should fix it before she would get stranded somewhere and after about a years the fuel pump shit the bed and I had to fix in the winter while it was snowing. I put a delco pump in it and rideing in the car was quite compare to before. then she sold the car that spring.

It's not hissing, it's humming.

Am I missing something?

Are you a paraplegic? Even if you were you could still roll in your chair to the parts store!

If you are going to be rude, please refrain from responding to my posts. :)

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll just keep an eye on it. If it starts doing anything more weird than just the humming, and random die it does when cold and i first put it into drive and try to accel, then I guess I'll worry. LOL.

Have you ever replaced the coils in it? When I had a coil start going bad in my Fiero, it would do that dying when cold and you tried to accelerate.. A couple months later, one of the coils took a dump on me..

Ignition coils? those were replaced, eh, maybe a year ago.

The random die isn't enough for me to worry about, it only does it when its cold, and runs great overall for the mileage.

If I might suggest replacing the fuel filter as something cheap to try.......

Sometimes a fuel filter restriction can cause the pump to work overtime and get noisy. A new one MIGHT cure it...........and if it doesn't, it's only $15 and 15 minutes of your time.

I would also suggest keeping the tank over 1/2 full at all times. That will extend the life as much as possible (fuel lubricates and cools the pumps).

Done and done. The filter was replaced less than 2k miles ago.
