CanadianGTP
Hey, new to the forum, just bought a 92 GTP yesterday. Its got a 5spd, which im told is super-rare, anyhow, its in super shape but I have a strange problem.... I went to start it this morning, and the starter engaged, and it started, but the drive kept on going, so I killed the ignition and it KEPT GOING!!! I calmy opened the hood and pulled the starter fuse and it KEPT GOING! So I pulled the relay and it KEPT GOING! So now Im starting to get worried because its been going for about a minute and it must be getting hot right? So I grabbed my tools so I could take off the washer fluid tank so I could take off the battery cables, and after about 4 minutes of this the starter just stopped. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED???? The starter was smoking after and smelled really bad, so Im afraid to start it again, any ideas??? Im not afraid to change the starter or anything, but would this be a faulty starter or something more involved? Could it somehow be getting power from some other wire or something? Like a crossed lead or something? Im bad with electrical stuff. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
mfewtrail
my guess would be the solenoid on the starter got stuck and it was somehow still receiving power???..maybe someone fiddled w/ the wiring to it and screwed it up :?:
patgizz
check the wires, its possible that the battery cable rubbed thru on the post for the ignition lead wire and kept it going till it burned up
CanadianGTP
Checked the wires, they look fine. Solenoid is ok, doesn't click or anything. Could it be the ignition switch in the steering column??? If that spring broke it could possibly run power to the starter solenoid constantly and overheat the switch and then stop. Thats the only thing I can think of.
Blown94SC
Solenoid was stuck in the on position. Replace the starter as it is probably junk now. Another possibility is the ignition switch shorted, not the lock cylinder on the column. Checked the wires, they look fine. Solenoid is ok, doesn't click or anything.
