I replace my timing belt about 5,000 miles ago and I just took off one of the covers and found alot of rubber shavings. Any ideas what went worng. It was a Gates kit with tensioner pulley and idler pulley.

Itlooks like where it might be rubing at the very bottom between the spocketand the flange. What is that spocket called and is there anything I can do to stop it.

Can you take a picture? There are about four sprockets not including the idler pulleys. Narrow it down for us.

No there are 2 idlers, tensioner, and 5 sprockets 4 for on the cams and one right above the crank shaft, thats the one in question.

It looks as if the back of the the belt is rubing on the flange area right under that lower sprocket. There is not that much clearance. Has this been a issuse on these motors or is there somthing else.

Call the dealer and they said theres a plate do I need to replace that as well. And is there some where to get it cheaper than $110.00

You should not need to replace the plate. I did a timing job on my car in May, and I did not replace the actuator. Time will tell whether or not it continues to run, but so far no hiccups.

well is the reason. It looks like the flat part of the belt is being shaved and the area in qusetion dose not have that much clearance. And what is that bottom sprocket attacted to?

The bottom sprocket, I believe, is the dummy camshaft. It is chain connected to the camshaft. It drives the timing belt for the four overhead cams.

New thought after look at it futher it looks as if the belt is walking on the cam sprockets. Could this be caused by sitting the tension too high.

The outer edge of the belt look worn down alittle. There is a small rub spot on the cam spocket cover. The belt seems the to be tight what would cause the belt to walk.
