Doc Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I replace my timing belt about 5,000 miles ago and I just took off one of the covers and found alot of rubber shavings. Any ideas what went worng. It was a Gates kit with tensioner pulley and idler pulley. Quote
GP1138 Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Did you replace all pulleys, and tighten them down straight? Tensioner going bad possibly? Quote
Doc Posted August 21, 2008 Author Report Posted August 21, 2008 Itlooks like where it might be rubing at the very bottom between the spocketand the flange. What is that spocket called and is there anything I can do to stop it. Quote
GP1138 Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Can you take a picture? There are about four sprockets not including the idler pulleys. Narrow it down for us. Quote
Doc Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 No there are 2 idlers, tensioner, and 5 sprockets 4 for on the cams and one right above the crank shaft, thats the one in question. Quote
Doc Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 It looks as if the back of the the belt is rubing on the flange area right under that lower sprocket. There is not that much clearance. Has this been a issuse on these motors or is there somthing else. Quote
IRONDOG442 Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Did you replace the actuator assembly? Quote
IRONDOG442 Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 That is probably the issue. I ALWAYS recommend replacing the actuator. Quote
Doc Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 Call the dealer and they said theres a plate do I need to replace that as well. And is there some where to get it cheaper than $110.00 Quote

And is there some where to get it cheaper than $110.00 Â You should not need to replace the plate. I did a timing job on my car in May, and I did not replace the actuator. Time will tell whether or not it continues to run, but so far no hiccups. Quote
Doc Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 well is the reason. It looks like the flat part of the belt is being shaved and the area in qusetion dose not have that much clearance. And what is that bottom sprocket attacted to? Quote
GP1138 Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 The bottom sprocket, I believe, is the dummy camshaft. It is chain connected to the camshaft. It drives the timing belt for the four overhead cams. Quote
Doc Posted August 23, 2008 Author Report Posted August 23, 2008 New thought after look at it futher it looks as if the belt is walking on the cam sprockets. Could this be caused by sitting the tension too high. Quote
Doc Posted August 24, 2008 Author Report Posted August 24, 2008 The outer edge of the belt look worn down alittle. There is a small rub spot on the cam spocket cover. The belt seems the to be tight what would cause the belt to walk. Quote
