ABS Speed Sensor Questions

Okay, I know some people love their ABS like crazy, others want it gone.

I want to be the type that loves their ABS like crazy.

My ABS light has been on since I bought my 96 Regal.

I run the scanner on it to find two of my wheel speed sensors come up as a constant 0MPH.

I was 99% positive that the non-serviceable wheel bearings had intergrated (non-removable) speed sensors.

But when I saw this, it blew me away.

Does this mean I can get my ABS fixed without having to buy 2 new wheel bearings!?!?!?!?!

I DO NOT want to drive this car in Michigan winters without ABS.

So is the ABS speed sensor serviceable?

Wait before you go replacing the sensor, check the two harness' at the front wheels to the inside of the wheel well. I replaced my sensor and found the harness was ripped off at one connector, aparently very common. Also my Z had this problem. Check them first.

Yeah, I checked all the connections, then I tested the speed sensors directly. Got a speed sensor plug off of a junk car, then plugged it in and tested for resistance (ohms). It should show something on a good sensor, but both of mine came up with nothing... I tested it on a good speed sensor to make sure I was doing it right on the other 2, and yeah, I was.

Also, if it helps, the ABS codes were for both of the rear speed sensors. But while reading the live feed while my auto teacher was driving the car, the Left Rear and Right Front sensors reported 0MPH, while the Left Front and Right Rear were basically in sync with eachother (except for during turns of corse.)

Do you think that would be the problem? Or is it probably something more complicated? In other words, what's the most common thing to go wrong with a speed sensor setup?

on my turbo gp the rear harness that goes from the body down along the rear lower control arm to the sensor had corrosion in the connector. i found some new terminals at work and put them in the connector. the signal was interrmitant, one day was fine next day there was rear sensor code. i was leaving my tech 1 in almost everyday just so i could find this problem.

The rear speed sensor harnesses are a very big problem area

The front sensors can be swapped out, the rear ones REQUIRE hub replacement..

I guess it's not worth it to buy the front speed sensor if the back still won't work.

Since the back won't work, the whole system won't work...

I'll probably just get all new wheel bearings once I get a job.

I only wanted to see if this would work because it's so much cheaper.

(My only income is 10 cent returns on pop cans/bottles, and spare change I find in peoples cars.)

Whoops just read again that it was the rears, not the fronts.

eh, same goes.

Anything wrong with grabing a wheel bearing from a J/Y?

I think they have a return policy for non-working stuff.

Worth a shot.

honestly i went 4 years without working abs and i never even knew it didnt work until i found that someone cheaped out on one of my rear bearings and there was no sensor lol. i replaced the bearing with the correct one which made the light come on, drove me nuts so i fixed the abs. I put 2 new sensors in the front and it works.

There is a few upsides, when braking on hills it seems to stop better and Braking from high speeds seems to be easier.

But the downside is every time i start the car and go to back out of my driveway usually when i go to stop the abs runs the self test or whatever it does and my pedal feels funny for a second. Weird but thats my only known downside

Was the dashboard ABS light out? Or don't you have one? Seems like a missing speed sensor would cause the ABS computer to go crazy! :willynilly:
