Great! What just happened...

On my way to get a new Cat. Converter(because it's too damn loud/broken inside), my 89 Supreme all of a sudden felt like it didn't want to take off from a Stop...then I noticed at the next Stop that the engine was "shaking" way more than normal, felt like it was going to die...I had my scanner hooked-up at the time and saw absolutely nothing out of the ordinary??

For a second, I seriously thought my tranny was shot, because when I tried to accelerate, it felt like gears were "grinding", and when I go to a steady speed of about 40 MPH, the whole car would start "shaking" again...it didn't feel like a regular miss or EGR problem though...it felt more like a PHYSICAL object was loose or worn or something...I could feel it in the gas pedal...it's hard to explain...and oh yeah, my steering wheel was all "shaky" as well!

When I got home, I popped the hood and can see for myself that indeed the engine is "shaking" quite badly...it's a lot worse when it's in Drive than when in Park...I can barely feel it when the car is in Park...but that's just because it's under less load...

Anyone with any ideas? If I remember correctly, this is almost the EXACT same feeling I got when a coil went bad...but I've since replaced my entire ignition with New parts!!??

THANKS!:)

how does your power steering feel? is it strong and tight? i know my belt jumps and shakes because my power steering pump isnt aligned or something is out of whack, its either the power steering pump or my ac compressor, you might want to check those too, see if AC works and the power steering is normal

But didn't you get an OBD Trouble Code?? I thought the crank sensor would cause the engine to not start??

I actually let the car sit for a few hours, and then went to get groceries...It was still bad but not AS bad as it was when the engine temp was about 200 degrees!

I put it in Park and played around with the throttle to see what would happen...I found out that if I increase the RPMs to about 1500, and just keep the throttle at that spot, you can REALLY feel a nice steady "shaking"/vibration that seems to subdue the entire car...I can feel it in the gas pedal, the steering wheel, and even my seat!

I was thinking it was surely a small mis-fire, but now I'm starting to wonder??

I got no code for my crank sensor. And, mine didnt "go out" like I said, the wire for it was grounding out to the block, causing an intermittent signal, making it miss horribly. I think you have other issues though, and they sound serious

lol, do i dare ask this? have you checked the oil recently? when my brother ran his car without oil it felt like a big miss in the engine (buick lesabra 3.8) check the oil, see if its good/clean/at the right level

This is an exact issue with our 1994 Pontiac Grand AM. It is an IDI (Integrated Direct Ignition) system. Tomorrow, I will check the spark plugs first. Crank sensor could be at fault. I'll post my progress.

gmrulz4u, my suggestion would be to just check the spark plugs as well and like they said.. check the crank sensor..

Addition:

Checked the car today and found out that the spark plug 1 and 3 are not getting sparks. Spark plugs 2 and 4 are getting sparks and what makes the car starts but shaking. Possible problem ignition coil or ignition module. Continuing with my diagnosis....

Replaced all spark plugs because they were old but it did not solve the problem. I've replaced the coil housing and problem solved. All four spark plugs are getting sparks now and works great.

Well my car is going in tomorrow morning, but I had a few other questions regarding things that "seem" weird...

First of all, as I've mentioned many times before, I have a Scanner that allows me to monitor a whole bunch of ECM parameters. So, I went out this morning just to make sure the car was still "vibrating" badly, and it was. BUT, I hooked-up my Scanner, and went through every parameter, and NOTHING was ab-normal!??

For example, if an engine is mis-firing, will that not cause a LEAN condition? Cuz mines not showing a LEAN condition at all!? In fact, it's still showing the slight RICH condition that it has had for months now, that I'm still trying to solve! So all in all, everything is the exact same as it was BEFORE the engine all-of-a-sudden started acting this way?? I figured if a coil went bad, again, or there was any other type of misfire or faulty injector etc...I would easily see the ECM responding to this on my Scanner!?? Strange...

Anything to add??

THANKS AGAIN!:)

I know exatcly what you mean. My friends 93 Prix is doing the exact same thing. Shakes uncontroable at idle until you get into some high rpms

I told him it was his timeing betl jumped time. this will be his 2rd replacement belt if he gets that done. his car isnt runing at the moment b/c of the serpintine belt fell off so the altinator dosnt charge the battery

Actually mine is BETTER at idle, not worse...

Well, technically it's at it's worse when it's between 1500-2000 RPMs.

I actually took it out today to drive around, and it wasn't all THAT bad...I mean it's definately driveable...

BUT, here's the FREAKY part, ever since this happened yesterday afternoon, my transmission is shifting AMAZINGLY well!! It's crazy, because my 1-2 upshift has had a really annoying "harsh" engagment, but now it's completely perfect!! At first I was like, "this can't be!", but after driving it for an hour, trying my hardest to make it do the same 1-2 "bang" upshift, it hasn't done it once!!!????

Again, all my ECM Scanner readings are looking almost exactly the same as before, including the Spark Advance, so I don't think it has anything to do with timing...but I'll find out tomorrow and let ya'll know for sure!:)
