missing after head swap

Recommended Posts

well, i seem to have solved the overheating problem with the vert.

my old head was cracked, so i swapped it with a good one from my ste.

now, after the swap, i have what feels like a miss in i think the number 3 cylinder. it has spark to the plug, and i replaced the plug with a brand new spare i had. same problem. injectors tested good before i reassembled the motor.

it is possible that i mixed up the pushrods during reassembly, but i don't think so.

any ideas?

if i reversed the intake and exhaust pushrods, would it feel and sound like a miss?

that's an easy enough fix, i could do that by just taking the valve cover off

Yes, it would feel and sound like a miss, cause it would be a miss. One of the valves would stay open all the time due to the pushrod being too long.

If that doesn't fix it, doing a compression test would probably be your next step.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I think your miss, is actually coolant getting into a cylinder. That sludgey stuff on the valve cover, thats the tell tail sign of a blown head gasket/blown intake gasket.

i pulled the manifolds. it has to be the front head gasket, because the rear head and gasket werw just replaced and the intake gasket is still intact and installed correctly.

most of the sludge is on the fron side of the intake manifold and in the front head valve train.

man this sucks. what are the chances this head is cracked, too?

I would change that head with another good one myself. I kinda scratched my head when you only replaced one head. I would've replaced bother of them just to be safe.

well, i was hoping to get away with one. i only had the one good complete hear, and it happened to be the rear head. so now if i have to replace the front one, i have to buy it.

considering i only paid 600 bucks for the car, i'm really getting close to where at best i'll break even if i have to part it out.

If you stated that you just had the rear head gasket changed, maybe the front head is leaking or a crack in a manifold is present. Or that could be just leftover coolant in the oil and made the buildup you see here. In that case, just flush the motor out with some tranny fluid or sone marvel mystery oil.

Either way, for the miss you should do a compression test and use a vacuum gauge as well. check your plugs. It could be something stupid that was looked over.

well, it definitely is NOT: heads, head gaskets, intake manifolds, intake gaskets.

all of the above was changed.

maybe i fouled a plug with all the water that was running through the motor? i am NOT going to do piston rings in this damn thing.

i hate to give up on her, but i'm going ot be left with nochoice. i'll get new plugs and see what happens.

Check the plugs. Spending $50 on a vacuum and a compression guage from autozone is worth it. It is not worth getting rid of your car without finding out the problem first.
