3.73 gearing in an LQ1?

Has anyone done this? My new old Cutlass vert 177K has a .89 overdrive chain set and had a 3.06 FDR unit, so I swapped it for a 3.33 fdr hoping it was a 2.84 with a 1:1 chain set. But now If i pull the trans to change the chain set(I have a 97 chain set from a Z34), should I put the 3.06 diff back in or try the 1.12:1 chain set with the 3.33 FDR? that would be a 3.73 gear and I wonder what the DOHC motor would think of that, with 215 60r16 tires. I wouldn't think mileage would be hurt all that much since it's a small displacement. I'd think it'd scream!

By the way, someone obviously stuck the wrong trans in it, it is RPO coded for a 3.43 ratio. the 2.73(.89 chain with 3.06 FDR) ratio it had didn't seem to affect shifting, it shifted OK and now since its 2.97(.89 chain 3.33 FDR) it still shifts the same.

Thoughts?

I had it in my Z34 several years ago. Expect it to be quicker off the line, but it does suck on the highway. Then again, I also had a 3000 stall convertor, so that made quite a difference as well.

Well did you like it overall? Suck meaning suck gas or just loud and high rpms? The 2.97 made such a help over 2.73 I may just go 3.43, since GM chose too they must've had a good reason, right?

You wouldn't, Ken! You like airplane gears!

I think the 3.73 would be fun, I doubt it would do fuel economy any good. but more fun, yes!

Wouldn't it make mpg's better around town? Because the engine wouldn't work as hard to get it to go?

But the rpms would be higher on the highway, and that's obviously why it sucks more gas on there.
