Cheaper Mod.........

Hey y'all, I think I have found a way to do a cheaper mod. I'm thinking about starting out with a different thermostat. I want something that will not harm my 3100 in any way, but will also give me a little power as well. so should I go with a 180 degree drilled or non-drilled t-stat? Oh and the plus side is that this is an extremely affordable mod.

Have fun doing it though. Thermostat's on Gen III 60 degree V6's are NOTHING like doing an old 350 SBC one..............

Oh, and I actually rather doubt you'll gain any real measurable power................but a NON drilled 180 won't hurt anything (except *maube* turn on your check engine lamp if it's a 96+ car).

I thought the drilled t-stat's would throw an ses light? That's what I've heard for 2nd gens at least.

I expect the drilled ones WOULD throw a P0128 ("coolant below regulating temp") DTC. I was just saying that even a non drilled one CAN in certain circumstances (the PCM looks at a little more than JUST coolant temp to set a P0128 IIRC).

already covered. The info there would be correct. And... you should ONLY put in a lower T-stat if you have altered the fan turn on times to reduce major cycles associated with driving in traffic and such.

Here's what I do. On 3100 cars I put in a drilled T-stat myself. this is intended to be an Air bleed hole in the factory temperature T-stat. basically I drill most of the way through a higher quality stainless steel T-stat and make the final hole with a push-pin. result is a air bleed hole that water barely passes through. No more air trapped behing the T-stat.
