Hello all,

Ive a problem with the a/c on my 98 chevy lumina, ive tried to research this problem on my own , but.......

Ok, when your driveing the car ( constantly moveing 20mph+) the a/c works great, in stop and go or at the drive thru, in the parking lot of wallie world HEHE, its awful, vent temps range from 55 to 70 degrees, if it gets to 70 the compressor shuts off and BAM 85 degrees air.

but once you get moveing,9 and by moveing i mean like 1/4 of a mile(or less)

ice cold air, ive seen it get down to 36 or so degrees on the hwy.

hell theres times ill park in the shade and the a/c will stay cold, sometime not.

ive had it professionally serviced, they thought it might be the a/c comp cycle valve, so they changed it, no dice, same problem, (hey at least the refunded me for the part labor), , the fans runs, but theres a bit of a lag time till the blow full speed like 10 seconds, there's good airflow across the condensor, ( no leaves or trash) the car has 126k on the clock ( i purchased the car in 2006 w/ 75k)

Iam totally lost, help

I wonder if those have an exterior temperature sensor, that will prevent the compressor from cutting in if it is below a certain temperature outside. It is possible that the sensor is failing, and the hotter temperatures fool the car into thinking it is below freezing and shutting down the compressor. As soon as it cools down a bit (airflow from driving) then it may start functionning.

  • 2 months later...

Hi all

Well last month i fixed the a/c problem ive had ever since i got the lumina in 2006

it was a bad clogged up engine radiator( that wasnt the reason i changed the rad one of the tanks split while i was in the middle of nowhere) , it was stopping the air flow accross the a/c condensor or most of the flow.

so my a/c works very well now, hell it wants to freeze up at times !!!

thanks for all of your ideas folks, btw i went with an autozone 1inch rad, up from the POS 5/8 factory rad

both right. there is a temp semsor that cuts off the AC above a certain temperature. Change your coolant and go spray all the bugs out of the radiator with the pressure gun at the car wash. Most likely the fan is suppossed to be on whenever the AC is on; open your door and the hood and listen for the fan when you switch the AC on and off. If the fan is out, it might be a sensor, a relay, a fuse, or the fan -- diagnose or get diagnosis before swapping parts. But since the AC works sometimes, I'm guessing the fan's okay but the cooling system has some other problem -- most likely old coolant or a bad coolant temp sensor or thermostat.
