slick
I'm thinking my starter is going out, but I'm no genious when it comes to figuring out what the problems are. Ok, so this morning me and my brother go out to my car to go to CC practice, we get in, and I try to start it. Everything powers up, but the damn thing doesn't start. So, Im like wtf? I try it like 2 more times, and nothing. So i pop the hood and have my brother turn the key. I hear, click buzzzzzzzz, so i tell him to let off the key. At this time, I'm hoping not the starter cuz I don't feel like spending my money on that. So I give my dad a call, he says drive the bonneville. Ok, did that. Come home, and I'm like Sean (brother) get the house opened up, I'm gonna see if I can start my car. You guessed it, starts right up like normal, I'm like DAMNIT! So I pull it into the driveway, and pull the bonneville behind it. I get out, and it reaks of exhaust. I'm like, what the hell. I know i have huge holes in my mufflers, so my car sounds bad as hell, but i've never smelled my exhaust this strong before, and there was a slight breeze at that too. So, thats how my day has gone so far.
92turboLE
i would almost put money on that it is the starter cylenoid. No need to replace the whole starter, just go to the auto parts store and get a cylenoid.... mine did that too, i would have to try it a good or 5 times to get it to start and sometimes it would start first try.... of course, get a second opinion, but thats the same charectoristics that mine had... - Justin
DOHCRagtopguy
Next time that you have this problem, give the starter a whack or two. Then try it. If it fires up, the starter itself is the problem. If you just hear a whirrrr type of sound when you turn the key, it would mean the bendix drive isn't kicking in to the flywheel. Hope this helps you some.
slick
Yep, it was the starter, I'm fixing it tonight after work. Anyone know why I would be smelling exhaust pretty bad?
Redfox340
Anyone know why I would be smelling exhaust pretty bad? Long or short trips? Does the car get to running tempreture? Is it sweet smelling or more like Sulfur (rotten eggs)? If sweet, you're burning off coolant and that's a bad thing... If Sulfur, sound like a bad catalytic convertor in conjuction with a fouling O2 sensor. Check back and let us know... - Erik

slick
It just reeked of exhaust that morning, but it doesn't now. I don't know, my car has a mind of its own. God the starter was easy to do, but the shim they gave me was too thin, so today me and my dad went out to his shop and he made me up another one, starts just like normal now.
