slick
I'd like to know what like the max bore you could do to a 3.1. Is there any aftermarket pistons for this? Is there any aftermarket crankshafts, or is the stocker all there is available? I know there are cams. Robby, what about the rockers you got, they seem to help? Are there any forged rods available, or do they have to be made? I'm asking this just for info. I'm not asking about the 3100/3400 because thats what I'm not interested in right now. Any other stuff is appreciated.
Robby1870
Well, the rockers worked wonders for my car, however, they are off and staying off for a few reasons. This is the 2nd time I have broke a pushrod guide plate, and last time, I was sure it was because I used the Comp Cams pushrods (equal length b/c 2.8 RWD had in line valves) on the exhaust and I was sure the rockers were hitting the guide plates and caused them to break. Now, this time, I had more than enough clearance, and the guide plate still broke. However, I found out that the pushrods were rubbing the inside of the "U" or fork on the guide plates, and, apparently, that is a weak spot in the plate. So, I mean, I could get all new guide plates again, and shave a little bit off the forks to make them now rub, but I have to go back to school in like 3 weeks and need something dependable, plus Im just saving my money for a project I have been thinking about. Now, you can get pistons made by just about any company on the web, I piston is a piston really, you can get them how you want, you dont have to order them for a specific motor, you just tell them the specs and they make it. There are some cams out there, but I dont think an aftermarket crank is needed unless you're going like 500HP, same on the rods. I mean, the Jeff M chip for TGP pushes boost to like 11.5 psi which pushes power to like 270-280, and that is on STOCK bottom ends. As for bore limits, I dont know, Im very curious myself, the best way is to take a block to a machine shop and have them tell you what is safe. slick
Ok, thanks for the help. I have a gm performance parts magazine that shows 2 3.1 engine blocks, and it says something like that bore range is 3.525-3.582 inches. Doesn't exactly seem all that big. I know crane cams has a cam for the 3.1, its right around $159 or so, not too bad of a price, but the GM catalog also has some performance cams in there too, not sure of price, but it does give the part numbers for all this stuff. I'm more interested in the 3.1 because of the wide range of parts available.
