Something happened to my shifter...

Z34-5speed

Recommended Posts

Ok guys, i was pulling onto a street, from a stop, and when i went to shift from 1st to 2nd i felt a clunk and a pop in the shifter itself. Then all of a sudden i had no resistance in the shifter. The car is stuck in 1st gear and when i move the shifter back and forth i encounter very little resistance, i can tap it forwards and it will bounce back and forth. It doesn't move side to side at all however. I can feel something in the middle of the 1-2 shift, but just like the shifter is grazing it.

I got the car home but i am going to need to fix this asap. I looked under the car and i didn't see anything hanging, but it was dusk so i'll look again tomorrow. The linkages were still connected to the tranny under the hood also. Any ideas???

Thanks,

Kyle

you may have had the same thing happen that happened to me right after I finished my swap, the grommet on the big shift cable actually dry rotted and cracked and fell apart. pull your shift plate up and you should see what I am talking about.

The place couldn't find any 284 cables. The Chevy dealer couldn't get ahold of them either, so the place actually rebuilt the old cable and now it works fine. Only cost me $150 to have them rebuild it.

Hal told me about when his broke(the car i now drive) he sent the broken one to some place in Cali that made a custom one with better materials, so it should last alot longer than the factory piece. i cant remember the name of the place. i need to look thru the mounds of paperwork for future reference.

I wonder how you rebuild a broken cable?

i found part of the puzzle. he took the Z34 to this shop where they replaced the cable, but the invoice reads like they sent the broken cable out to another specialty shop to have the custom cable made, at a cost of $250. i will email Hal and see if he remembers who made the custom cable. meanwhile, the shop he took it to that replaced the broken one with the custom one is:

Taylormade Automotive

344 Victory Ave

San Fran, Cali

650-873-2022

BTW this was done for him in late June of 2005. invoice # 000029221

Im wondering that as well. what happens if the plastic ends break off or the pretty much any other part other than the cabel itself breaks. epoxy? i think not

http://www.boogerracing.com/boogerbushings.html (for rotted bushings, if your cable is still good)

I found out about this this a couple of months ago - this guy makes the bushings (that GM didn't sell seperately). Mopars used the Getrag 284 in some applications, with different bellhousings, so you can't buy Mopar app. Getrag and bolt it up to a GM engine - but the same problem exists with the original bushings wearing out or falling apart.

The place in California (now moved to Chico, CA) is:

http://www.push-pull.com/ (for replacement cable fabrication)

They made my replacement shift cable in 2005 for me. Send your old one in and they'll duplicate it and ship it to you. I had mine done with smaller metal ends that could be held on with washers and c-clips - no more of that plastic stuff for me.

They used to be Hayward, CA - but the high cost of living in the area has a lot of places relocating elsewhere. At least they're still around!
