mdelorie
Can this be done? I figure it might be a good opportunity to learn a little more about the whole fuel delivery system and the ecm and such. unless of course, some of the appropriate sensors don't fit. The only possible snag I can think of right now would be the injectors. Do MFI injectors have the capability to fire independently of one another? Any info anyone might have on the procedure would be great!

mdelorie
Okay, so what other sensors might I need? I'm under the assumption the SFI setup uses a different ECM.

A cam sensor is critical, which is all but very difficult to even contemplate putting on a 3.1.
Robby1870
the SFI uses a sensor on the cam to tell the ECM when each cylinder's intake is opening so that the ECM can fire the injector to coincide with the intake opening. So, you would need a 3100 cam (its a roller cam) so you would need the roller lifters, so the swap over is more trouble than its worth, since you would need a 3100 ECM on top of the cam an what not. mdelorie
and to change the lifters, you have to tear apart the top end. well.. this cam sensor... is it actually impossible to add to a 3.1 cam? apparently this issue has been visited before: http://www.diy-efi.org/gmecm/archive/2000-September/msg00008.html by none other than our own Shawn Lin. Robby1870
Yeah, the cam sensor is part of the cam, so it cant be added to a 3.1L cam, and yes to change the lifters you have to take the upper and lower intakes off Robby
GnatGoSplat
The cam position sensor actually fits in a hole in the engine block, so the engine block is different. It's not a part of the cam, but it does read a reluctor that's cast into the cam. Basically, it's not feasible to add SFI. To change the block is more elaborate than an engine swap, and if you're going to that much trouble, might as well swap in a 3400!
mdelorie
Assuming a 3400 swap: Will the plug on the firewall that leads to the interior just connect no problemo? assuming I got it from a W?
GnatGoSplat
My guess is NO, more recent GM cars don't have a firewall connector at all, just a grommet. It would probably be easiest to adapt 94-95 3.4 DOHC wiring and ECM.
