ooh!! I didn't see you had an LS1 car too. Noice.

I would just rev it for a minute max then let the engine get to operating temp, or at least close to it.

I revved it up, held it for a minute... same story. Same knocking

So... yeah. I'm stuck.

IT WENT AWAY!!!

I basically let the car run and REALLY warm up. Revved it up once again for about a minute and then the noise got quieter and then totally disappeared!!!

=)

Thank you everyone, especially Brian P.

 whew!! Glad it worked out. I've done so many of these gasket jobs and most of them did this to some effect.

Congrats! I feel so good for you. That's a huge job. It's great Brian could pass that experience on so you could succeed.

Awesome, glad to hear that! BTW, I totally blanked on the fact that this was a 3100 and not the 3.1MPFI  I knew there had been oiling changes made for the GenIII motors, but I didn't know exactly what they were. Thanks for that bit of knowledge brian! :high5: That sure does explain the lack of oil flying while running with the covers off, though I gotta think the cam and valvetrain would wear a lot faster in that setup. But that is a different subect for another thread. Just glad to hear it is running right... I love the feeling when you successfully complete a project like that. :high5:

Yeah the thing is, now that I did it and had all this hassle, I feel like I could do the whole thing again in a day - forward and back. I've already had to take off and put back on a lot of things not once but twice and figure out how to just remove the covers without removing anything else. I think it was a good experience. And also knowing that any garage would have stripped me of at least $650 to do this job (and would probably use the plastic gaskets, not the metal ones), kept me going. I didn't finish closing it up last night, I will tonight, and will take it for a spin. :burnout:
