Olds W31
My 94 Olds Cutlass has started making a noise that sounds like its transmission related. The noise is a metallic rattling sound, but it is NOT CV joints (at least none of the 10 or 12 I have ever heard go bad). It is lighter and does not behave as a CV tends too (remains after you straighten out of a turn for a few seconds). It is throttle related, used to be only in first but seems to have progressed into 3rd (drive). I have also noticed what sound like "pump whine" I guess I am really just wondering if anyone else has experienced noisy transmission and, if so, how long did it live until....... I have been contemplating a 5 speed swap....maybe I need to get more serious. Any body have the parts I need?

BXX
Your front pump and/or bearings are bad. There isnt much time left on that trans..

mrl390
I sure hope you disclose the problem. It would be a real dick move to throw the problem off on someone else without telling them.

jmoore4294
lol this may sound stupid but how is the power steering x2 My car makes a whine too. I know it's the PS pump....I just tell people I have a supercharger installed!!!
Olds W31
I think the PS pump is fine. That was my first thought, as this whine is rpm related, but it seems to be coming from lower down. I will pull the belt off and make a quick spin around the block (oh, wait, no PS) maybe a slow, laborious spin around the block and note if the whine changes/goes away. The other clue I just started noticing is (and it has only done this twice, now)....the TC lock up occurs early and stays locked up, even under acceleration. When I applied the brakes it unlocked as it should. I think a 5 speed would solve ALL of my problems.....
rockfangd
that would do it lol
old442man
Mine has been making noise for at least the last 80,000. I just keep running it tc is fucked of course but it'll still get up and go like a raped ape. Try the filter, that's relatively cheap and it's always helped mine quiet down. I just keep running it tc is fucked of course What is wrong with the TC? I think I have determined it is the "Stator support/drive sprocket bearing", which is an $8 dollar part that probably takes $1000 worth of labor to replace (location, location, location). http://www.tripleedgeperformance.com/4T65E_Parts.php look about 2/3 the way down the page..... They also describe some other possiblilities, but its late.

old442man
The TC kicks in and out and doesn't fully lock up unless I really get on it, like going up a hill it seems like I have a bad miss. I have another tranny and I've been thinking about getting it rebuilt for when the time comes but my motor doesn't seem as strong as it used to be either so I'm not sure what to do.
