91LuminaEuro
Well, today i decided was work on my car day. I changed the oil + filter, transmission fluid+ filter I also re-painted some trim pieces and my grill. However, what im most proud of is my new air box. I do not plan on keepign my car for much longer than a year or two, however the motor has less than 30k on it since i put the new Jasper Engine in back when i was 16, anways point of the story is i did not want to spend the money to get a cold air intake kit or anythign else, but i wanted a high flow filter and to get some more air flow to the filter. So what i did was simple, and i know i've seen it done before, it may have been here, or it may not have been, i honestly can't remember. Anywho, i just took a couple different size hole saws to the bottom half of my air box, and voila. I ordered a Fram Air Hogs air filter today so hopefully it will be here in a few days and i'll be in great shape! Your opinions and comments are welcome. Let me know what you think! here is a couple quick pics i took, they arent the best but eh.. Here is the engine compartment with the fresh paint, it was just a touch up, just to see what i could do, nothign spectacular. I want ot wait a few days until the paint cures and clean up the engine compartment. Before... After...

Brian P
Swiss cheese and overspray. 'Kay!!
digitaloutsider
It would have done just as much good to rip that snorkel off the airbox. And I understand not really caring, but was masking tape that expensive?
91LuminaEuro
yep. it was kind of an impulsive task. i had only planned on painting the air box once it was done, but then i decided to do the rest. Im going to clean the engine compartment today so it will all go away. A little backwards but the end result will be the same.
per0781
reminds me of myself in 2000, except for the overspray.
91LuminaEuro
The overspray is gone now! no more worries! its all fixed and clean! I cleaned it all up and cleaned the engine bay up as best as i could! I'll put up a pic when i can.
Cam'ron
so your stock airbox is now just sucking in a bunch of hot air from in the engine bay? or is there some amount of blocking from the heat under there... not to familiar with how those are laid out under the airbox. 91LuminaEuro
The original intake was a tiny little snorkel that stuck out to the front of the car, under the core support. The air may have been somewhat cooler, but it wasnt breathing very well IMO. Right now it probably does suck warmer air, but more air, and there are holes on both sides of the box which i hope will help keep the air cooler. My future plans are to make a FWI, but for now i just wanted to give this a try and see what happens! Doesn't hurt to give this a try though! Until i can come up with a good design for my FWI. I promise you that there is no difference in the amount of air going into your airbox. if you wanna get technical, there is probably less air since the air getting in is warmer. with that said. I have this same mod done. although i do plan on having a functional hood scoop in the next couple months. RAHMMMM AIREE FTMFW!!!
91LuminaEuro
Haha thanks for the input! Yeah i figured id just do it and whatever happens happens, because i plan on workign on somethin better in the future.
slick
Warmer air = better mpg!
91LuminaEuro
Really? I always thought cooler air was better? Hence "cold air intake"? Or this just a common miss-understanding?
Captain Ficho
Really? I always thought cooler air was better? Hence "cold air intake"? Or this just a common miss-understanding? Cooler air = better for performance, warmer air = worse for performance Cooler air = worse for gas mileage, warmer air = better for gas mileage
slick
I guess if you want to get really technical, the performance, in terms of efficiency, increases as the temperature increases.
Brian P
cold air: denser, more oxygen content, more fuel, more power warm air: less dense, less engine pumping losses, less fuel, more miles per gallon.
91LuminaEuro
Ah i see! I always knew why cold air was better for performance, but i didnt know warm air worked for my MPG, cool thanks! On a side note, i installed a Fram Air Hogs air filter today, i was gonna get a K&N but the lovely guys ar RockAuto.com had a the Fram Air Hog for cheaper, and its supposed to be a high air flow like the K&N. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with them and if they're any good?
per0781
stick with a regular paper filter. i've seen dyno comparisons between a K&N filter and a regular fram paper filter and basically no hp gain at all.
