dohc v6
I was crusin in my lumina last night and I noticed a big big problem. The thing in the middle of the car (shift lever) controls the shifting. So.... I was thinking and it made me think. How about a 6 speed swap?? So I want to get some opinons on this idea and what all it would take. I know the trannys are like $400 and then a flywheel, clutch, LSD, and custom mounts and bellhousing adapter. Let me know what you think.

Z34-5speed
I think it would be kickass. I do believe someone on this site was trying something similar. Kyle

dohc v6
http://www.v8archie.com/v8Archie/Prod3.htm if they can get it to work in a fiero subframe then I am guessing it will work in a lumina.
BIGBULS
It's been done in a Grand Am GT. BUT. The gearing is NOT suited to a turbocharged V6. 1st gear is WAY too deep and will result in NOTHING but wheelspin, and the first 4 gears are actually spaced out MORE than an HM 282 or HM 284 5 speed. Some of the Saabs with this tranny get better gearing than the G6's etc, but then you have a bellhousing that liekly will NOT bolt up...............so............yeah
BIGBULS
http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73212 Read all of it if you have time.........it's a *fairly* easy swap into an N-Body, but he STILL had to do a good chunk of fab work and parts mixing/matching. Euro
I think it would be kickass. I do believe someone on this site was trying something similar. Kyle I don't think that swap was ever more than a "future plan"
dohc v6
I am not looking to race the car, I just want a tranny that will handle a little more power and it alot nicer to drive. The 284s are not serviceable so forget that. We have one and nobody can get parts. I think this is my best bet. My question is what all need to be modified? Will it bolt to the bellhousing? Anything need to be moved around it? How will a 96 computer react? What are all the parts I will need? I know that I will need cables, clutch, drive shafts, pedals. The shafts I can have custom made, thats not a problem. The pedals are an easy bolt in from a 5 speed car. The cables I wonder if they will reach, then also what kind of clutch to use. I think I am going to do this.
dohc v6
Whats the rating on a 282? Maybe I can grab one out of a sunfire and beef it up to handle 400hp?

jerry455
282 are only around low to mid 200's for torque capacity i don't know about the g6 6 speed but on pennocks fiero forum there are several people putting in that trans.
w-bodys_are_the_best
Whats the rating on a 282? Maybe I can grab one out of a sunfire and beef it up to handle 400hp? I don't think the sunfires had a 282, sunbird's did with the 3.1, but you also cannot use a J-body 282. It must be from a W-body, the mounts are completely different. When I was looking at buying that Cutlass with the blown diff, the trans guy in town here has gotten 284 parts recently, and can still get them somehow. The 284 was supposedly the strongest front drive transmission GM made. You are right though, if you can't get parts for it what's the point. GutlessSupreme
Non-W 282s don't even have the mounting bosses on the case half for our lower tranny mount. If you're going non-W then some kind of custom bracketry would be needed, but I don't see the point instead of just getting a W tranny. edit: I looked over the GA page.. 1st gear is shallower than the 282s (3.7x vs 3.50), but the other gears aren't that far off (.02-.03). And 6th on the MT2 is actually a decent overdrive instead of our .72, and the final drive is lower a bit (3.55 vs. 3.61).
gpchris
Yes I am in the middle of my 6speed swap. I think the hardest part was finding the parts that would work. Now that I have its going along pretty smoothly.
dohc v6
Oh we have to talk. I want to do this in the near future. How much you think its gonna run ya? I know I can get a brand new tranny for $350.
gpchris
The only thing about this swap that makes it possible is the price of the trans. Most everything else has to be bought new from gm. Total price for the swap is about 3 grand. my aim is gpchris95 im me this evening.
