Hey all, I heard from somewhere that you cannot pull both axles out of a FWD trans at the same time because of some pin that falls or something like that. is this true.

Not true. Pull away! Actually, I believe they are refering to four wheel drive. Some of those units have washers, clips that will fall into the housing when removing axles. Front wheel drive-not a problem

That IS true. The differential in the transmission can fall out of place and you'll never get the axle back in. Do one at a time to be safe - and if you must have both out use a dumby axle to hold the differential in place.

Not all cars are like that, but it's hard to know which are and which aren't. VW for example -their differential will move out of place.

where can i get dummy plugs, i really dont want to pull the tranny out with a shaft still in there. I can already see the swearing happening with one shaft flopping around while working it down.

Obiovusly a few people have verified it'll be okay with both shafts out - I was just saying that not all transmissions are like that

ya our diffs are supported by bearings in the case... I'm not sure how that would be different in any other tranny, but anyway, it's not going to go anyway.

Ok... I just reread this and LMAOED..

And I've had only one CV shaft out at a time. Why do you need both out?

1990 Lumina-you're right. I made an assumption seeing that his ID was Grandprixse. And you know what happens when you make an assumption-you make an ass out of you and umption. I assumed he had a W body that he was pulling the tranny from.

Ive had both axles out simultaneously on a 4t60e, 4t65e-hd, and a 282. ive never heard of such an issue and im confirming that it isnt one, at least with our cars. what will happen is trans fluid will come out, auto or manual, thats about it. also i beleive most vw use the wonderful bolt together axles (by wonderful i mean HORRIBLE) where nothing inside of the trans is physically ever removed from it.

You can remove both axles from the tranny in our cars. But, my Topaz was a weird one. If removing the right axle, the left had to removed first and a dowel shoved thru to support the differential.
