My latest exhaust upgrade... Exhaust vid added, pg 2

Well, after getting pulled over and told my car is too loud I decided to do something about it and started buying up exhaust parts. Now I'm sitting here and can't sleep so I might as well post my progress...

As the story goes last summer I swapped exhausts with Matt (GOT2B GM), the end result of which was this video...

And now for the new stuff. All my work is being done from the resonator back.

New Vibrant 18" resonator

New Y pipe (wait till you see the old one!)

04+ tips (yes, the ones that look like a pigs nose, lol)

and all the pipe after the Y is being changed because I have to move the mufflers to allow the tips to fit, so I bought 2 180* U bends.

First we had deconstruction day

CIMG3989.jpg

What a mess...

During deconstruction my one goal was to dissect the Y pipe and find out why my exhaust only comes out one side unless you cover the tip. What I found was a disgrace to the exhaust community, lol

The following picture is looking into the Y-pipe inlet (2.5" in, two 2.25" out)

Thats right, look at the obstruction! I might as well of had a 1.5" pipe from there back!

With that out of the way the new exhaust can start to go in. I put a flange on the inlet to the new resonator just to make things easier should I ever have to pull the system back down.

From there I salvaged the S-bend that was on the car before to go from the res to the Y pipe. In hind sight I should of shortened this to make life easier later down the road, but oh well.

CIMG4165.jpg

then it was on to mocking up the mufflers. Well it turns out Magnaflow mufflers and 04+ tip are a long combination. I only had a few inches to get the bends I needed in there, and the pipe I bought was WAY too big. So to save some space I cut the inlet and outlet pipe off the muffler to allow the tip and pipe to go right in 1" (any more than 1" would of started to cut into the perforated material inside the muffler) Even after that I was still extremely limited on space. this whole job has been on a tight budget so going and getting new pipe wasn't an option, so I made do with what I had. The end result was 2 45* bends and a straight section between them. I know the bend is less than ideal, but it was my only option.

CIMG4168.jpg

And this is where it sits... Passenger side is done with the exception of the hanger on the muffler. And we have cut a few parts for the drivers side.

I'm doing all the welding myself... I know they aren't great, but not only is the welder I'm using around 15 years old, but I haven't welded in about 8-9 years.

who the hell did that old Y-pipe?

Wow....

Matt had it done at a shop in Woodstock Ontario. He has requested that I bring the old one back with me and I think he has plans of taking it back there and showing them, or at least throwing it through their window.

You REALLY should do ALL of the piping with mandrel bends...........it WILL be worth some power.

Like I said... I know, I had no other options because I'm tapped for cash, I had to make do with what I have... besides, seeing that old Y-pipe, nothing I do is going to make it worse.

Failure to read FTW!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah I'd be pretty pissed about that y pipe.

Looks pretty good for doing it on your own though, can't wait to see the finished product.

Sorry, never thought to take interior shots of the Y, I bought it off matt and I know he has another one. When he gets back to town I will get him to take a couple interior shots.

My father and I took a second look at that non mandrel bend pipe. The U pipe I bought had a total width of 11" so any 90*/90* S bend would of taken up at least 11" in each direction. The space I had to deal with was 6" max. The tightest 90* bends I can find are 9", anything smaller and you have to go to a donut. I would of NEVER found anything like that locally in this small town.

Its still a little loud but the 2500rpm rasp is gone. I will get a sound clip tomorrow. (too late to go out and rev the engine a few times without pissing off my parents neighbors)

Here are a few pics from my last day of construction.

Welded up and ready to go in for the final time.

CIMG4205.jpg

It now sits about 3" higher up than the old exhaust

CIMG4209.jpg

Getting the tips to sit right where I want them (still have to replace the drivers side rubber hanger)

CIMG4210.jpg

My welds got better as the project went on, here is one of my last ones... not bad for not welding in 9 years.

Like I said, I'll get an exhaust clip tomorrow, I'll probably post it tomorrow evening.

Failure to read? Go fuck a hairy goat noob. I wanted to know WHO or what kind of shop (or was it homemade, made by a trade school student, etc) would make such a thing.

Oh yeah, and I took it for a nice cruise down the highway today...

I used to get about 27/28 mpg cruising at 90-100km/h @ 2000rpm, now at those same rates I'm getting 33/34mpg!

Looking good Jamie!

The new Y is one used on new chrysler LX cars.

The inside is as smooth as the outside.

It was all in the Y pipe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

definitely!! Power gain too!! This car never used to spin the wheels going straight through an intersection, only when I was turning. Now it does it fairly effortlessly.

Of course this could mean worse launches at the track, so we'll see, I never did get my 255's on the last time I was there.

Here is the one Matt just bought only in the size you want, maybe he'd be nice enough to get some interior shots of the one he got.
